Mooney Scores in Second Overtime for Pittsford
Ellie Mooney scored with 0:57 remaining in the second overtime period to give Pittsford the 6-5 win over Fairport. The Panthers came back from trailing to force overtime and then secure the victory. The Red Raiders led for the entire game and the first time that Pittsford took the lead was the game winning goal. Pittsford continued their winning streak vs. Fairport, having won the last 14 times that they faced.
Fairport played an extremely strong game and led or tied for all of regulation. The key to the Red Raiders play was senior goalie Isabel Hofford. Hofford finished the game with 12 saves. Her saves were stellar and over the course of the game saved 4 point blank shots to keep the Panthers from scoring. She demonstrated why she is one of the top goalies in Section Five.
The first quarter was a defensive battle. Only three goals were scored (two by Fairport and one by Pittsford). Both teams played strong defense and kept the pressure up. Pittsford's defense made shooting difficult for the Red Raiders. They only allowed 7 normal shots (with 4 free position shots). The Panther defense often shifted to the double team and forced offensive driving players to abandon their shot. Conversely, Fairport's defensive was spearheaded by Hofford. Pittsford took 10 shots in the first quarter with 7 saves from Hofford.
Cameryn Dera scored the opening goal of the game for the Red Raiders 14:01 remaining. Dera scored off an inside feed from Hannah Marafioti. Marafioti was a large offensive threat for the Red Raiders. She finished with 2g-1a for Fairport. Six minutes later, Pittsford tied the game with a drive around the back of the cage by Elizabeth Blanding. The final goal of the opening quarter was scored with Marafioti assisting Brittney Pollack. Pollack caught the pass directly on the crease and turned to shoot over the top of Pittsford goalie Michelle Messenger. Fairport led 2-1 after the first half.
Coming into the second half, the offense of both teams picked up the pace. Pittsford scored the first goal 1:40 into the half with Mooney scoring the first of her two goals with a fast break goal. Fairport took back the lead with back-to-back goals. The first goal was scored by Morgan Schwab on an 8m free position shot. Marafioti scored the second goal with a fast break goal. Pittsford came back and scored the next two goals. Jillie Quevedo scored the first goal of the pair with a fast break drive down the entire field. She finished her goal into the upper corner of the goal. The second goal of the pair was scored by Blanding (unassisted). She scored the same way as her first goal with a drive behind the cage.
With 10:28 remaining, both teams became more defensive and the speed of play slowed down with both teams attempting to make the most of their ball time. The final Fairport goal was scored when Maddie Howe had a quick pace into the crease to Dera. The Red Raiders gained control of the ball with 3:40 and attempted to hold the ball. They kept the ball for nearly the entire time before Pittsford forced the ball to the ground with 0:27 on the clock. Pittsford's Jenna Doyle forced the ball down before it was picked up by Sarah Stark. The ball was quickly pushed up field with Blanding scoring her third goal of the night to force a tie with 0:07 left on the clock.
Pittsford won the draw but did not get another shot at the cage before overtime. The Panthers continued their strong draw control play from the second half and won the opening draw control for the first overtime period. The Panthers kept the ball nearly the entire time before Fairport forced a turn over and an offensive opportunity with less than 30 seconds remaining. Neither team took a shot in the first period. In the second overtime period, Fairport won the draw control as Pittsford was given a yellow card. The Panthers went man-down and Fairport went on offense. The Red Raiders still failed to take a shot before turning the ball over approximately one minute later. The Panthers took the ball upfield and Mooney scored the game winning goal of a slow break down the right side of the field. She brought the ball nearly all the way to crease before curving her drive in front of the crease and faking a shot high before scoring.
For Fairport, Pollack led in draw controls with 2 and ground balls with 4. For the Panthers, Mooney finished with 4 ground balls. Doyle finished with 3 caused turnovers and Quevedo finished with 4 draw controls to lead the Panthers.
