2017 Post Season Tournaments Summary

The 2017 Post Season Tournaments are concluded.  This article has a summary of all links to Tournament games at the Sectional and State Level.

SECTIONAL SEEDING

The final seeding information is now available.  The top seeds went to Pittsford (Class A), Brighton (Class B), Mercy (Class C), and Waterloo (Class D). The out-bracket games will be played on Friday May 19th and Saturday May 20th.  The Brackets are now complete.

OUT BRACKET GAMES

The first round of the tournament are out-bracket games in both the Class B and Class D Tournaments.  In Class B there are a total of 13 teams in the tournament.  The top three teams will receive bye games and the remaining 10 will play in 5 out-bracket matchups.  In Class D there are 10 teams in the tournament.  The bottom four teams will play off in 2 out-bracket matchups.

The first round of games will be played either Friday May 19th or Saturday May 20th at the discretion of the teams/athletic directors.  The schedule will be updated when a game time is known.

Summary: There were 7 games played with the higher seed winning in each contest.  The largest win was Thomas (#4) over Gates Chili (#13) 17-1 (HERE).  The closest contest was Gananda (#8) over Midlakes (#9) 9-8 in overtime.

 

QUARTER FINALS

With only 4 teams in Class A, their tournament will not begin until the Semi-Finals.  The remaining three classes will play their Quarter Finals on May 23rd and 24th with the higher seed having a home game.

Class B and Class D have full quarter final brackets with 4 games in each tournament and will be played on the 23rd.  Class C has 2 quarter final match-ups with the top 2 seeds receiving byes and will be played on the 24th.

Summary: There were 10 games played with the higher seed winning in each conest.  The largest win was Pal-Mac (#2) defeating Livonia (#7) 20-3.  There were 2 three goal contests with Brighton (#1) defeating Irondequoit (#8) 9-6 and Aquinas (#3) defeating Marcus Whitman (#6) 13-10.

 

SEMI-FINALS

All four classes have Semi-Final match-ups.  Beginning with the Semi-Finals, all matches will be played at a neutral site and will have a $4.00 entrance fee that is set by Section Five.

Class B and Class D will play first on May 26th.  The Class B games will be played at Pittsford Sutherland at 5:00 and 7:00 with the highest remaining seed playing at 5:00.  The Class D games will be played at Eastridge HS at 5:00 and 7:00 with the highest remaining seed playing at 5:00.  Waterloo (Class D Top Seed) has chosen to play second at 7:00 at Eastridge.

Class A and Class C will play the second night on May 27th.  The Class A games will be held at HFL at 11:00 and 1:00 with the highest remaining seed playing at 11:00.  The Class C games will be played at Webster Schroeder at 11:00 and 1:00 with the highest remaining seed playing at 11:00.

Summary: All Tournaments had 2 games each in the Semi-Finals.  In addition, three lower seeds defeated higher seeds.  Thomas (#4) defeated Brighton (#1) 8-6, Penfield (#3) defeated Rush-Henrietta (#2) 10-5 and Penn Yan (#4) defeated Waterloo (#1) 13-6.  The remaining five games were won by the higher seed.  The largest win was HFL (#2) over Geneva (#3) 16-2.  Thomas' win was the closest of the Semi-Finals.

 

FINALS

Like the Semi-Finals, the Final match-ups will be split up between two nights.  Additionally, the $4.00 admission fee from Section Five is still in place.

Class B and Class D will play the first night on May 30th.  The games will be played at Pittsford Sutherland with Class D playing at 7:00 and Class B playing at 5:00.

Class A and Class C will play the second night on May 31st.  The games will be played at Webster Schroeder with Class C playing at 5:00 and Class A playing at 7:00

Historical Changes: Due to differences in Class breakdown between the boys and girls, Pal-Mac (who reached the finals for both boys and girls) was previously scheduled to play both Title matches at the same time.  However, Chairman Al DeCarlo has worked with the athletic directors to change the times for the Girl's match-up and allow parents and fans to see both contests.  Full information is here (Championship Scheduled Changed for Pal-Mac).  The site is currently being updated to reflect the change.

Summary: Three Sectional Championships were won by the second seed.  Only a single match-up was won by a lower seed.  HFL (#2) defeated Mercy (#1) 19-7, it was also the largest win.  The closest win ws Pittsford (#1) over Penfield (#3) 6-3.

Class A Champion: Pittsford - 4th Consecutive
Class B Champion: Canandaigua 
Class C Champion: HFL - 6th Consecutive
Class D Champion: Pal-Mac

 

STATE QUARTER FINALS:

 

All four Section Five teams advanced to the Semi-Final with wins over their Section Six opponents.  Canandaigua defeated Hamburg 16-6, HFL defeated Lake Shore 16-12, Pal-Mac defeated East Aurora 17-0 and Pittsford defeated Frontier 15-1.

STATE SEMIFINALS:

Two Section Five teams advanced to the Finals.  Pittsford came back to defeat CBA 9-7 and HFL fought back for an overtime 8-7 win over Vestal.  Canandaigua fell to Fayetteville-Manlius 17-11 and Pal-Mac fell to Skaneateles 10-7.

STATE FINALS:

Pittsford became the third team in Section Five history to win a State Title (fourth overall title).  The Panthers defeated Middle Country in double overtime 10-9.  HFL fell in the state finals for the fourth time with a loss to three time defending Champion Mt. Sinai.
