DAY IN REVIEW: WEDNESDAY - The six-game lineup featured a number of close games. Honeoye Falls-Lima edged Pittsford 10-9 in a back-and-forth battle, fueled by Shaye Angelo’s five-goal performance. Mercy earned a 11-10 win over Irondequoit behind four goals from Mia Quagrello. Lily Kondas had five goals as Fairport extended its winning streak to eight games with a 10-7 victory over Victor. Elsewhere, dominant showings from Geneva, Penfield, and Rush-Henrietta rounded out the day's action.

Aquinas-WOIS earned a hard-fought 16-14 victory over Waterloo, led by Brynn Henry’s six-goal performance. Spencerport celebrated a dominant 17-6 win against Wayne, with Brooke Endres scoring eight goals and Aria Pittman reaching her milestone 50th career goal.  DAY IN REVIEW: MONDAY - Highlighting an action-packed Monday slate of games, Harper Jacob and Shaye Angelo each scored five goals to help Honeoye Falls-Lima edge Thomas in a hard-fought 14-10 showdown. Rush-Henrietta continued its dominance over Mercy with a gritty 9-7 victory, highlighted by Taylor Potwin’s 100th career save. Schroeder powered past Hilton 11-6, fueled by Lola Wambach’s three goals and Maura Ugine’s seven saves. Elsewhere, Penfield earned a decisive 14-9 victory over Brighton, and Victor, Mynderse-Romulus, Spencerport, and Geneva all won in dominant fashion.

DAY IN REVIEW: SATURDAY - South Jefferson (Section III) edged past Victor in a nail-biting 14-12 non-league clash. Irondequoit continued its recent dominance over Thomas with a 13-3 win. Pal-Mac scored five unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to secure a 13-7 triumph over Horseheads (section IV). Mercy fell just short in a tight 12-11 battle against Ithaca (section IV). Pittsford, Geneva, Penfield, and Eastridge/BK were among the other winners on a day filled with standout performances and milestone achievements.

DAY IN REVIEW: FRIDAY - Fairport edged Canandaigua 6-5 in overtime, with Ellie Miller scoring the game-winner just 40 seconds into extra time. Brighton held off Honeoye Falls-Lima 11-9, despite four goals from Harper Jacob. Elsewhere, offense predominated, as Mynderse-Romulus surged past Newark-Midlakes 20-7, and Livonia-Avon-Geneseo and Aquinas-WOIS lit up the scoreboard in a 21-15 victory for the Lakers. Several career milestones were reached on Friday as well, including the 100th draw control for both Lily Rowe (Livonia-Avon-Geneseo) and Nola Weaver (Canandaigua), and the 100th save for Aviana Nelson (Canandaigua).

In total, eight games were played, featuring a mix of high-scoring affairs and defensive showcases across the region.

2024 Season Wrap Up

There were thirty teams playing Varsity Girls Lacrosse in Section V. There were 688 players on the final rosters. Brockport carried the largest roster with thirty-one players and Waterloo-Marcus Whitman had the smallest with fourteen. 

There were four classes for the sectional tournaments. Penfield (A), Canandaigua (B), and Mercy (C) and Penn Yan (D) were the top seeded teams.

Fairport beat Rush-Henrietta and Pittsford for their championship. Second-seeded Victor beat Thomas and then Brighton before defeating top-seeded Canandaigua for the Class B Championship. In Class C, Mercy beat Wayne and then HFL in a close game to claim their championship while in Class D, Penn Yan beat Marcus Whitman, Aquinas/WOIS, and Pal-Mac for their title.

The teams were able to play a full season again in 2024. The first games were played on March 25th with Hilton, Spencerport and Schroeder winning their openers. The last regular season game was played on May 16th when Canandaigua defeated Churchville-Chili.

The 262 regular season games were played and the 138 league games determined the league championships.

At the end of the year, the Section V Head Coaches selected the post-season award winners including their All-League players. Then they selected five USA Lacrosse All-Americans and five All-Academics. Named All-Americans were Reagan Diehl (Pal-Mac), Ella Peers (Fairport), Devin Livingston (Victor), Hanna Davis (Canandaigua), and Molly Guzik (Spencerport).

Named All-Academics were Alli Chimenti (Wayne), Katie Mallaber (Fairport), Alyssa Nichols (Spencerport), Angelia Oechsle (Rush-Henrietta), and Lucy Lederman (Brighton).

Honeoye Falls-Lima Head Coach Kevin O`Connell was named Coach of the Year from Section V and the Jackie Pitts Award winner was Zoe Baase from Brockport.

After the regular season, the Section V tournaments were conducted. Fairport (Class A), Victor (Class B), Mercy (Class C) and Penn Yan (Class D) were the Sectional Champions in 2024.

The New York State Tournaments were back in full swing and sectional champions went on to play Section VI champions in the Western Regionals (quarter finals).

In Class A, Fairport beat Lancaster (12-7) and then defeated Massapequa (Section VIII) 10-9, taking them to the finals where they lost to Cicero-North Syracuse (Section III) 12-8.

In Class B, Victor beat Clarence (Section VI) by a score of 22-0. They then beat West Islip (Section XI) 11-10 and defeated West Genesee (Section III) 16-8 to win their third Class B NYS Championship in a row.

In Class C, Our Lady of Mercy won their game against Lake Shore of Section VI 17-8 but then lost to Sayville (Section XI) by a score of 13-8 in the semifinals. Penn Yan beat Gowanda (Section VI) 17-4 before losing to Cold Spring Harbor (Section VIII) 18-4 in the semifinals.

By the end of the season at least sixty-four players had made college commitments. They will become part of over three hundred players from Section V who are currently playing at all college levels.
