Close Calls and Big Wins Define Saturday’s Games

DAY IN REVIEW: SATURDAY -  [UPDATED] Eight games were played today, featuring several standout performances and close battles. Fairport edged Penn Yan in a thrilling 10-9 contest, with Ellie Miller scoring the game-winner, while Rush-Henrietta topped Queensbury 15-11, a game highlighted by the 200-point milestones reached by both Danielle Garrett and Kate DeWald. In another competitive matchup, Frontier secured a 17-12 win over Livonia-Avon-Geneseo, with Maddie Whitford and Sidney Clickner combining for 10 goals in a losing effort. Wayne earned a solid 10-5 victory against Niagara-Wheatfield, and Pittsford defeated Orchard Park 16-11. Other games were markedly more one-sided, including Victor’s 20-6 triumph over Mercy, Brockport’s 23-8 win over Newark-Midlakes, and Honeoye Falls-Lima’s 20-2 rout of Greece Storm.  

NIAGARA-WHEATFIELD-5 at WAYNE-10 - Wayne defeated Niagara-Wheatfield 10-5 in a non-league game, led by three-goal performances from Isabella Veltre and Lauren Twist. Ninth-grader Dalilah Rommevaux made seven saves.    [ Story and BOX SCORE] 

BROCKPORT-23 at NEWARK-MIDLAKES-8 - Brockport defeated Newark-Midlakes 23-8 in a non-league contest. For Brockport, Molly McJury and Adysen Birge combined for 14 goals, and Jessica Maher recorded seven saves.     [ Story and BOX SCORE]

QUEENSBURY-11 at RUSH-HENRIETTA-15 - Rush-Henrietta defeated Queensbury 15-11 in a non-league matchup on Saturday. Mercy Makes History, Close Battles Define the Day

DAY IN REVIEW: FRIDAY - Friday’s matchups featured several exciting contests, including Mercy’s historic 10-8 victory over Canandaigua, marking the Monarchs' first-ever win against the Gray Wolves. Fairport rallied to defeat Irondequoit 12-8 in a suspended game, led by Ella Peers and Camryn DuBose. Aquinas-WOIS edged Clarence in a competitive 14-10 battle, fueled by standout performances from Savannah Hinchcliffe and Brynn Henry. Elsewhere, Eastridge/BK extended its winning streak to five with a commanding 23-5 win over Newark-Midlakes, while Pal-Mac rolled past Waterloo 22-6.

Close Matchups and Commanding Wins on a Stormy Night

DAY IN REVIEW: THURSDAY - Brighton earned a hard-fought 13-10 victory over Schroeder, marking its 12th consecutive win in the series history between the teams. Eastridge/BK surged past Aquinas-WOIS, powered by Neely Hawn’s six-goal performance. Pittsford earned its sixth win of the season with a dominant 15-3 victory over Thomas, led by Cecily Kaul and Morgan Wilson. McKenna Anderson and Maia Pronti helped Victor cruise to a 20-4 victory over Hilton. The game between Fairport and Irondequoit was suspended with Irondequoit leading 4-2 early in the second quarter. The game between Honeoye Falls-Lima and Churchville-Chili was unreported and likely postponed, as was the match between Rush-Henrietta and Spencerport.  

EASTRIDGE/BK-13 at AQUINAS-WOIS-6 - Eastridge/BK earned a 13-6 win over Aquinas-WOIS in a non-league game on Thursday. Four Games On Wednesday

DAY IN REVIEW: WEDNESDAY - Four games were played today, including a close matchup at Mercy, where the home team overcame Penn Yan 14-10 to remain undefeated on the season. Bailey Cooper led Penn Yan with five goals and three assists in the loss. Newark-Midlakes, led by Zoey Overslaugh's five-goal performance, secured a 13-9 victory against Gananda-Marion, despite five goals from the Blue Panthers' Lexi Gallina. Elsewhere, Pal-Mac defeated Wayne 16-3 and Waterloo outscored Marcus Whitman 15-3; Brinn Castrechini scored five goals for Pal-Mac, and Maci Mueller had five goals to lead Waterloo.

DAY IN REVIEW: TUESDAY - On an action-packed Tuesday, six games took center stage. Irondequoit edged Canandaigua in a close 9-7 battle, with standout performances from Irondequoit's Lucy Whipple and Canandaigua's Samantha Lupton. In other tight matchups, Pittsford defeated Fairport 10-7, and Aquinas-WOIS, led by Brynn Henry's exceptional all-around play, triumphed in a high-scoring 18-15 non-league thriller against Livonia-Avon-Geneseo. In other action, Penfield, Brighton, and Churchville-Chili each claimed decisive wins, rounding out an eventful day of competition.

Marcus Whitman earned a 14-12 victory over Newark-Midlakes in a Finger Lakes showdown, driven by Sophia Snyder's four goals and Sydney Shaw's 12 saves. Eastridge/BK outscored Greece Storm 17-11, powered by Neely Hawn's five-goal performance and Ada Krupa's dynamic playmaking. The remaining games were somewhat less competitive contests, including Honeoye Falls-Lima's 19-2 rout of Gates Chili, Livonia-Avon-Geneseo's 16-4 victory over Gananda-Marion, Spencerport's 20-7 triumph against Waterloo, Churchville-Chili's 17-7 defeat of Brockport, and Pal-Mac's 16-9 win over Hilton.

2024 Season Wrap Up

There were thirty teams playing Varsity Girls Lacrosse in Section V. There were 688 players on the final rosters. Brockport carried the largest roster with thirty-one players and Waterloo-Marcus Whitman had the smallest with fourteen. 

There were four classes for the sectional tournaments. Penfield (A), Canandaigua (B), and Mercy (C) and Penn Yan (D) were the top seeded teams.

Fairport beat Rush-Henrietta and Pittsford for their championship. Second-seeded Victor beat Thomas and then Brighton before defeating top-seeded Canandaigua for the Class B Championship. In Class C, Mercy beat Wayne and then HFL in a close game to claim their championship while in Class D, Penn Yan beat Marcus Whitman, Aquinas/WOIS, and Pal-Mac for their title.

The teams were able to play a full season again in 2024. The first games were played on March 25th with Hilton, Spencerport and Schroeder winning their openers. The last regular season game was played on May 16th when Canandaigua defeated Churchville-Chili.

The 262 regular season games were played and the 138 league games determined the league championships.

At the end of the year, the Section V Head Coaches selected the post-season award winners including their All-League players. Then they selected five USA Lacrosse All-Americans and five All-Academics. Named All-Americans were Reagan Diehl (Pal-Mac), Ella Peers (Fairport), Devin Livingston (Victor), Hanna Davis (Canandaigua), and Molly Guzik (Spencerport).

Named All-Academics were Alli Chimenti (Wayne), Katie Mallaber (Fairport), Alyssa Nichols (Spencerport), Angelia Oechsle (Rush-Henrietta), and Lucy Lederman (Brighton).

Honeoye Falls-Lima Head Coach Kevin O`Connell was named Coach of the Year from Section V and the Jackie Pitts Award winner was Zoe Baase from Brockport.

After the regular season, the Section V tournaments were conducted. Fairport (Class A), Victor (Class B), Mercy (Class C) and Penn Yan (Class D) were the Sectional Champions in 2024.

The New York State Tournaments were back in full swing and sectional champions went on to play Section VI champions in the Western Regionals (quarter finals).

In Class A, Fairport beat Lancaster (12-7) and then defeated Massapequa (Section VIII) 10-9, taking them to the finals where they lost to Cicero-North Syracuse (Section III) 12-8.

In Class B, Victor beat Clarence (Section VI) by a score of 22-0. They then beat West Islip (Section XI) 11-10 and defeated West Genesee (Section III) 16-8 to win their third Class B NYS Championship in a row.

In Class C, Our Lady of Mercy won their game against Lake Shore of Section VI 17-8 but then lost to Sayville (Section XI) by a score of 13-8 in the semifinals. Penn Yan beat Gowanda (Section VI) 17-4 before losing to Cold Spring Harbor (Section VIII) 18-4 in the semifinals.

By the end of the season at least sixty-four players had made college commitments. They will become part of over three hundred players from Section V who are currently playing at all college levels.
