Penfield Claims NYS Class A Title With Win Over Suffern

Penfield secured its first-ever New York State championship with a 9-3 victory over Suffern (section I) at SUNY Cortland on Saturday morning.

Key to the win was a combination of stifling defense, a relentless ride, and stellar goaltending the Patriots used to hold Suffern scoreless for a 36-minute stretch from the end of the first quarter through the end of the fourth quarter. Karis Hand was spectacular in goal, finishing with eight saves. Riley Corcoran, Emma Alexander, Avery Fordham, and Alyson Welz combined to cause eight Suffern turnovers; Avery Fordham also recorded a team-high six ground balls.

On the offensive side, Avery Fordham led Penfield with four goals. Jenna Capozzi had two goals and one assist. Emma Alexander scored two goals, and Reegan Sercu added another. Peyton Rothfuss registered three assists. Whitney Reynolds also had an assist.

With this win, the Patriots completed their season with an 18-3 record, capping off an impressive run to the championship and staking their claim as the top public school program in New York State.    [ Story and BOX SCORE
