Thompson Scores Five in Wildcat Win

Emily Thompson scored five goals in Marcus Whitman's 11-8 win over Mynderse.  The Wildcats scored six unanswered goals in the first half to take control of the game and held off the late advance by the Blue Devils.  Thompson scored all five of her goals in the six goals stretch.  The Blue Devils scored five of the last seven to bring the score closer in the end.

Mynderse scored the first goal with a feed from behind the cage by Sadie Mapstone to Sarah Shaffer.  Two minutes later Marcus Whitman tied the game with Abbie Alvord scoring on a drive from the left side of the crease.  Alvord scored 3g-2a in the contest.  The Wildcats took their first lead of the game with an inside feed from Ellie Nemitz to Alvord with 17:21 remaining in the first half.  Although the game was tied at 2-2 shortly thereafter, Marcus Whitman never trailed again.  The tying goal was scored by Mykenzie Turner with a sweep along the top of the 8 meter arc.

Marcus Whitman scored the next six and held the Blue Devils scoreless for over 10 minutes.  Five of the six goal were by Thompson.  She scored with a drive down the middle, a fast-break off a draw control, back to back drives at the cage and an inside feed from Alvord.  Her first goal was scored after an impressive defensive effort by Jordan Knapp.  Knapp played a strong defensive game and helped the Wildcats secure the victory. With 4:59 remaining, Mynderse got back on the board.  Sadie Bonnetti scored with a fast-break goal.  Charlotte Alvord scored her lone goal of the game with a drive down the center on the field past three defenders.  The final goal of the half was scored by Mynderse.  Turner scored her second goal after driving one-on-one at the goal from the right side.  Marcus Whitman led 9-4 at the half.

Mynderse outscored Marcus Whitman 4-2 in the second half, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit.  Mynderse scored the opening goal with a set play.  Divya Tewari and Turner both drove around the back of the cage.  Turner had the ball and went first.  When she came around the far side she dodged high above the crease and Tewari came in behind the defense and scored near the crease.  Knapp scored the first of her two goals with off a fast-break with a feed from C. Alvord.  Junior Sara Partee scored the next goal for the Blue Devils off a restart on the right side of the crease.  After play resumed, she wasted no time and drove straight at the goal.

The final goal for the Wildcats was scored on an inside feed from Thompson to Knapp.  Thompson, who was an offensive presence in the first half, played a strong defensive game in the second half.  She finished with 3 successful rides and a stripped ball against the Blue Devils.  The final two goals of the game were both scored on 8 meter free position shots.  Turner scored the first and Shaffer scored the second.   Junior Goalie Liz Cooley had saved (or the shot missed) on the first 3 free position shots of the game.  Cooley finished with seven saves for Marcus Whitman.

In the cage for the Blue Devils, sophomore Gabby Cosentino recorded 10 saves.  Both teams were relatively close in draw controls, with Marcus Whitman winning 11 and Mynderse winning 9.  Mapstone finished with 6 of the 9 for the Blue Devils.  The Wildcat's draws were more spread out with Thompson and Knapp grabbing three each.
