Bell and Lill Lead Schroeder to Victory
After a close first half, Webster Schroeder pulled away with four unanswered goals early in the second half. The Warriors defeated Brockport 13-8. Schroeder scored the opening goal and although Brockport forced three ties, the Warriors never trailed. Payton Lill (3g-2a) and Madison Bell (5g) led in scoring for Schroeder. Leah Daly (4g-1a) led for the Blue Devils.
Schroeder scored the game opener 0:37 into the match. Victoria Gottorff scored with a drive from behind the cage. Three minutes later, Daly scored her first goal of the match. She forced a broken clear and scored unassisted. The Brockport riding attackman and midfielders had a great game; they stopped multiple clear attempts by the Warriors and gave their offense a second attempt to score. Paired with winning over 50% of the draws gave the Blue Devils significant amounts of possession time. After Daly’s goal, Schroeder responded with two goals of their own. Both were scored off 8m shots (Bell and Paige Gottorff).
In total, Schroeder scored 5 goals off 8m shots and Brockport scored 3 goals off 8m shots. Brockport’s Erika Ruggieri scored back to back goals to tie the game for the second time at 3-3. The first was an 8m goal and the second came off a feed from Daly. Daly spent much of the game doubled or tripled on defense. This assist was to an open Ruggieri cutting across the crease. For the second time, Schroeder scored back to back goals to take a 2-point lead. The first was an 8m goal from Lill and the second was a feed from the right flat by P. Gottorff to Bell. Brockport scored the final goal of the first half. Tori Lammes had the ball behind the cage with approximately 1 minute remaining in the half. She patiently waited for an opening. She drove along the left side of the cage and found a cross crease feed to Daly to pull within one goal. Schroeder led 5-4 at the half.
Brockport came into the second half with a new plan at the draw. They won five of the first seven draws in the second half. Four were won by Daly. She led her team with 9 draw controls. Daly grabbed the opening draw and passed the ball up to Emma Moulton. Moulton drove to the crease, and after an errant check by her defenseman; she stepped inside the defender for a 1-0 against the goalie. Schroeder goalie Jorden Concordia finished with 10s (54%) between the pipes. However, she excelled just outside the pipes. She finished the game with 4 interceptions and a team leading six ground balls. With Moulton’s goal the game was tied for the last time at 5-5.
Schroeder took control of the game and scored the next four goals. The Blue Devils fought back and tried to stay in the game, but the Warriors controlled the score and the pacing of the game. Brockport scored 2 goals after the Warrior run, but the Warriors scored another four in response to lead 13-7 with 4:10 remaining. The Warriors finished the regular season 8-8 and Brockport finished 4-11.
