Wayne Wins First Sectional Game in Program History
Wayne scored four of the last five goals to pull away and defeat Newark 9-4. This was the first Sectional win in program history for the Eagles. The game was close for most of the first half, before the Eagles began to pull away. As the second half continued, Newark could not close the gap and Wayne slowly expanded their lead.
Wayne scored the first two goals of the game within the first five minutes. Paige Knowles scored the opening off a feed from behind the cage from Casey Hibbard. Less than one minute later, Mary Panepento assisted Mackenzie Orcutt with a drive along the left goal line and a pass across the crease. Newark’s opening goal was scored off an 8m free position shot. Knowles scored her second goal from the middle of the 8m arc. Jillian Pembroke drove the from the top of the field and after the slide, found Knowles open in the middle of the field. The Reds kept the game close with their second goal. Senior Katie Thoms showed patience behind the cage and found Lauren Schroo open for the goal.
The Eagles scored the next two goals to increase their lead to 5-2 with 7:13 remaining in the first half. Hannah Burns scored both goals for Wayne. The first was off a restart near the restraining line, where she was not immediately picked up by the defense and drove all the way to the goal. The second began with a pass from Katie Leaty to Burns just behind goal line extended on the right side. Burns dodged inside her defense and scored from point blank. Newark’s final goal of the first half was scored with another feed from Thoms. This time to Grace Gajan. Wayne finished out the scoring in the half with goals from Panepento and Hibbard.
In the second half, only three goals were scored. Wayne scored two with scoring once again from Hibbard and Panepento. The lone goal for the Reds was scored by Kalista Swan off a feed from Amanda Hutteman. Wayne goalie, Morgan Osborne recorded 3 saves in the second half and 7 for the entire contest. Newark’s Alexis Horn really stepped up in the final half and recorded 6 of her 8 saves in the second half. For Newark, Schroo led in draw controls with 3. For Wayne, Bailey Jenkins recorded 6 draw controls to lead her team.
