Nothnagle and Herring Lead RH in Win

Rush Henrietta came back with the final three goals to defeat Webster Thomas 8-7.  The Royal Comets were led by their defense.  Goalie Kaila Herring and defenseman Clare Nothnagle were demonstrative in the win and were the key factors for the Royal Comets.  The remaining three starting close defensemen were all Sophomores and also had a great day: Jenna DeVito, Amber Daley and Grace Nothnagle.

Herring was impressive between the pipes; she finished with seven saves in free play as well a two off of 8m free position shots (58% on the game).  Both 8m shots were impressive saves by Herring and she finished off the first half with four straight saves to hold the Titans to only 4 goals in the first half.  Nothnagle was equally impressive, but with less statistics to quote.  She finished the game with 2 groundballs and 1 caused turnover.  However, she was constantly pressuring the Titan offense, or running down a loose ball.  Her aggressive play kept the Royal Comet defense up and kept Thomas off the board.  As a team, the R-H defense was aggressive, focused and kept constant pressure on the Titans.

Thomas goalie Alyssa Piechota also had a strong game and finished with 7 saves (including 3 off of 8m free positions).  The Titan goalie had to face ten 8m shots from the Royal Comets (although 3 missed the cage).  Four of the goals for the Royal Comets came off of free position shots.

The game opened with back to back goals from RH.  Jenna Brill scored the first of her 2g with the first 8m free position goal.  Less than a minute later the Royal Comets added their first free play goal.  Rayea Davis scooped up a loose ball on the left side of the crease and came around to the front to score.  Thomas responded with the next four goals.  Abby Quinlan fed the ball to the crease from behind the cage and found Sydney Dron open.  A short time later, Mary Soures fed the ball into the crease from the top to Isabelle Robarge.  Robarge scored the first of her 2g-1a with an underhand back-handed shot.  Soures was the major offensive threat for Thomas with 3g-2a on the day.  She scored the next goal for the Titans off the 8m arc.  The fourth goal for Thomas was off a fast-break.  The play began with RH breaking the Thomas clear and coming back for their own unsettled drive to the cage.  The ball was checked down by Cate Robarge and picked up by Soures.  Soures ran the ball upfield herself and found Quinlan for the goal.  With 9:54 remaining in the first half, Thomas led 4-2.

RH responded with two more goals to end the half tied.  Their third goal was another fast-break, Kate Mashewske knocked down the ball and grabbed the groundball to clear it upfield.  She passed the ball inside to Emily Schillinger.  Schillinger dodged two defensemen and finished into the back of the net.  With 2:45 remaining in the half, Schillinger scored her second goal off another 8m shot to tie the game going into halftime.

In the second half, RH scored first with Brill scooping up a loose ball near the top of the crease and finishing into the back of the net.  Thomas responded with a three-goal run to re-take their lead.  Soures scored the first two goals.  The first was a fast-break goal that she took straight into the goal.  The second was a feed from behind the cage from Quinlan.  The final Titan goal of the game began with a strong defensive play by Keyla Bay.  She caused a turnover and cleared the ball up.  The ball went behind the cage to Cate Robarge.  Cate fed the ball to the crease for Isabelle Robarge and the goal.  Thomas led 7-5 with 6:08 remaining.

RH added another 8m goal with 5:22 remaining to pull within one.  With under two minutes remaining, Thomas received a yellow card and went man-down for the remainder of the contest.  RH took advantage and scored the game tying goal off their fourth and final 8m goal (Schillinger).  The game winning goal was a drive from behind the cage by Gabby Garrett.  Garrett came up the right side of the cage and then dropped back to score.

The draw controls were evenly matched.  Thomas won 6/9 in the first half and RH won 6/8 in the second half.  Soures (4) and Isabelle Robarge (4) each grabbed half the total draws for Thomas.  For RH, Maddy George (3), Mashewske (3), Brill (2) and Courtney Rowe (1) accounted for their draws.
