Section Five Finals
Updated 05/29/2018 The Tournament has been completed and we have our Champions. In Class A, Penfield defeated RH. In Class B, Brighton defeated Spencerport in overtime. In Class C, HFL defended their Title and defeated Geneva. In Class D, Pal-Mac defending their Title and defeated Penn Yan. In addition to securing the Girl's Section Five Championship, the Penfield Patriots Boy's program also won the Class A Title.
The Section Five Finals are set to played tomorrow Tuesday May 29th at two sites. Class A will feature 2nd seeded Rush-Henrietta hosting 4th seeded Penfield at 5:30 PM at East Rochester. Class B will feature 1st seeded Brighton hosting 2nd seeded Spencerport at 7:30 PM at Pittsford Sutherland. Class C will feature 1st seeded HFL hosting 2nd seeded Geneva at 7:30 PM at East Rochester. Class D will feature 2nd seeded Penn Yan hosting 4th seeded Pal-Mac at 5:30 PM at Pittsford Sutherland.
Three high school programs have made the Finals in both their Girls and Boys programs and Girl's Chairman Jeff Onze has worked to separate the times enough for fans to see both games whenever possible:
- Penfield Girls will play at 5:30 PM on Tuesday at East Rochester and the Penfield Boys will play at 7:30 PM on Tuesday at St. John Fisher College.
- Geneva Girls will play at 7:30 PM on Tuesday at East Rochester and the Geneva Boys will play at 5:00 PM on Tuesday at St. John Fisher College.
- Penn Yan Girls will play at 5:30 PM on Tuesday at Pittsford Sutherland and the Penn Yan Boys will play at 5:00 PM on Wednesday at St. John Fisher College.
CLASS A:
The Class A Finals are set with #2 Rush-Henrietta hosting #4 Penfield. The Royal Comets last made the Finals in 2008 when they won the Class A Tournament. The Patriots last made the Finals last year where they lost to Pittsford. The Patriots last won the Tournament in 2013. During the regular season, RH defeated Penfield 14-7 (HERE).
Coming into the contest, RH is 14-3 with single goal losses to Pittsford (overtime) and Skaneatles and a 10-3 loss to West Genesee early in the season. RH is lead in goals by Gabby Garrett with 44, assists by Rayea Davis with 22, draw controls (94) and ground balls (23) by Kate Mashewske and caused turnovers by Rachel Crane, Amber Daley, Clare Nothnagle and Maddy George with 3 each.
Coming into the contest, Penfield is 13-5 with single goal losses to Baldwinsville (overtime) and Canandaigua. Penfield is led in goals by Madigan Lublin with 43, assists by Morgan Cox with 38, draw controls by Nina Nesselbush, ground balls by Beth Lawatsch and caused turnovers by Chelsea Akins with 17.
Tonight, Penfield defeated RH 8-6 to win the Class A Championship. The game was close for the first half before Penfield scored three unanswered early in the second half to pull ahead. Junior Attackman Morgan Cox finished the game with 4g-1a and was named Tournament MVP. For RH, Rachel Crane (1g-1a), Rayea Davis (1g-1a) and Gabby Garrett (2g) all finished with 2 points. Penfield will continue on to the State Tournament and will face the Section Six Champion on Saturday June 2nd at 5:00 PM at HFL.
CLASS B:
The Class B Finals are set with #1 Brighton hosting #2 Spencerport. The Barons last made the Finals in 2014. They last won the Tournament the year before in 2013. The Rangers last made the Finals in 2016. Our records do not have Spencerport winning a Section Five Title. During the regular season, Brighton defeated Spencerport 13-8 (HERE).
Coming into the contest, Brighton is 13-5 with a single goal loss to RH (overtime). Brighton is led in goals by Kathryn Smolensky with 47, assists by Katie Lederman with 33, draw controls by Rene Gangarosa with 62, ground balls (24) and caused turnovers (18) by Susan Lafountain.
Coming into the contest, Spencerport is 13-5. Spencerport is led in goals by Natalie Choate with 60, assists(68), draw controls (115), ground balls (33) and caused turnovers (35) are all lead by Erin Coykendall.
Tonight, Brighton defeated Spencerport 10-9 in overtime to win the Class B Championship. The game winning goal was scored by Katie Lederman during overtime. Lederman was named to the All Tournament team and finished with 4g for the Barons. Brighton had an 8-4 lead in the early second half, before Spencerport score four straight goals to force an 8-8 tie with 11:18 remaining. Kathryn Smolensky scored the first goal ahead for Brighton with 7:36 remaining. The Rangers kept up the pressure and forced the tie with 0:21 remaining on the clock with an unassisted goal from Camryn Sack. Additional stats are HERE.
Brighton will continue on to the State Tournament and will face the Section Six Champion on Saturday June 2nd at 7:00 PM at HFL.
CLASS C:
The Class C Finals are set with #1 HFL hosting #2 Geneva. The Cougars last made the Finals last year where they also won the Tournament. HFL are the six time defending Class C Champions. The Panthers last made the Finals in 2011. Our records do not have Geneva winning a Section Five Title. During the regular season, the teams did not face each other. The last contest was last year's Semi Finals were HFL won 16-2.
Coming into the contest, HFL is 5-12 with a single goal loss to Penfield (overtime). HFL is led in goals Kierin Ratliff with 26, assists by Jill Sullivan with 21, draw controls by Paige Smith with 39, and ground balls by Hailey Bushnell with 16.
Coming into the contest, Geneva is 7-10 with a single goal loss to Gananda 11-10. Geneva is led in goals (44), assists (17) and draw controls (62) by Lily Sellers, ground balls by Keyla Martinez with 30, and caused turnovers by Madison Kaenzig de Denus with 14.
Tonight, HFL won their seventh straight Sectional Championship with a 20-7 win over Geneva. The Cougars had ten players make thier offensive book. Leading the charge were four players with four points each: Payton Reed (4g), Eliza Wild (4g), Lexie Ruff (3g-1a) and Jill Sullivan (2g-2a). Wild also led in draw controls with six and ground balls with seven. Additional stats are HERE.
HFL will continue on to the State Tournament and will face the Section Six Champion on Saturday June 2nd at 1:00 PM at HFL.
CLASS D:
The Class D Finals are set with #2 Penn Yan hosting #4 Pal-Mac. Both teams last made the Finals last year where they faced each other and Pal-Mac won 16-5. The last time the Mustangs won the Title was in 2006. During the regular season, Pal-Mac defeated Penn Yan 18-5 (HERE).
Coming into the contest, Penn Yan is 12-4 with a single goal loss to Marcus Whitman (overtime). Penn Yan is led in goals (57), ground balls (49) and caused turnovers (17) by Hannah Keech and assists (40) and draw controls (111) by Sydney Bloom.
Coming into the contest, Pal-Mac is 13-5 with a single goal loss to Waterloo 13-12 early in the season. The Red Raiders defeated top seeded Waterloo 10-7 to advance to the Finals. Pal-Mac is led in goals by Andra Savage with 64. Assists (53), draw controls (90), ground balls (89) and caused turnovers (53) are all led by Emma Arnold.
Tonight, Pal-Mac won their second straight Sectional Championship with a 12-6 win over Penn Yan. The Red Raiders led 5-1 at halftime before extending their lead in the second half. Emma Arnold led her team with 6g-3a and was named Class D Tournament MVP. She also finished with 8 draw controls, 5 ground balls and 4 caused turnovers. Additional stats are HERE.
Pal-Mac will continue on to the State Tournament and will face the Section Six Champion on Saturday June 2nd at 3:00 PM at HFL.
