Garrett and Schillinger Lead the Royal Comets to Victory
Rush-Henrietta scored the first five goals to lead 5-0 on their way to a 16-6 win over Livonia. The Royal Comets controlled the pace of the entire game, although there were stand out performances from both teams during the contest.
Gabby Garrett (who finished with 3g-2a) scored three of the first five goals. Her second goal came off a broken clear where she was responsible for taking the ball back and pushing to the goal. Her third was scored with an impressive drive from behind the cage. Livonia scored their first goal with 14:54 remaining in the first quarter. Lindsey Lopresto scored with a drive from the top of the 8 meter. The goal was scored on the first offensive possession for the Bulldogs. In general, Livonia looked strong on offense, but they had the ball for too little of the game with the Royal Comets dominating the draw control.
A main component of the draws going to R-H came from freshman Kate Mashewske, who finished tonight's game with 5 controls. She leads her team this season with 35 (8/10 games reported). She also finished the game with 2g-2a. Mashewske took every draw and often forced the ball to one of her teammates. Over the course of the game R-H won 14/20 draws.
The Royal Comets kept up their scoring and added four more goals before halftime. The scored three of their goals on inside feeds and the fourth with a drive from the top by Rachel Crane. Lopresto scored her second goal with another strong drive from the top of the scoring area. The half ended with Livonia attempting a free position 8 meter shot. Lopresto had the ball and she passed it off to the crease for the shot; however, the officials ruled that the quarter had expired before the ball crossed the goal line. R-H led 9-2 at halftime.
In the second half, Livonia added four more goals and RH added seven more. RH scored the first three with a fast break goal from Emily Schillinger (assisted by Destinee Johnson), a free position goal from Crane and an inside feed from Schillinger to Maddy George. Livonia kept their heads and never gave up. Even though they trailed by 10 (12-2) they kept driving to the goal and kept getting points. The Bulldogs scored four the next five goals. The first two were fast break goals from Lauren Connor and Lopresto; the second two were drives from behind the cage from Lopresto and Addyson Gammon. RH scored the final three goals to bring the differential back to 10 goals.
Although the score favored R-H strongly, the Bulldogs played a good game. They never gave up and pressed the entire 50 minutes. There were strong defensive plays from Alli Coon, Sara English and Lauren Connor. For the Royal Comets, Crane (a freshman) played good defense in addition to her 2 goals. Schillinger was an asset on both sides of the field with strong offensive work as well as patient defense for the Royal Comets.
