Monday's Lacrosse Showdowns: Nail-Biters and Standouts

DAY IN REVIEW: MONDAY - Today's lacrosse games featured thrillingly close matches. Canandaigua’s 10-9 overtime win over Honeoye Falls-Lima featured standout performances from the Gray Wolves' Lola Schorr and the Cougars' Shaye Angelo. In Mercy’s 10-9 victory over Irondequoit, the Monarchs' Mia Quagrello and the Eagles' Grace Bottiglier each had four goals. Victor, led by Allie Pisano and Maia Pronti. claimed a 21-7 victory over Watertown. Fairport and Penn Yan both came up short in their games, the Red Raiders dropping a 10-8 decision against Smithtown West and the Mustangs falling to Cohasset by a score of 12-8.  

CANANDAIGUA-10 at HONEOYE FALLS-LIMA-9 - Canandaigua eked out a 10-9 overtime victory over HFL in a Monroe County lacrosse matchup on Monday. Lola Schorr’s efforts (2g/5a) helped Canandaigua secure the win For HFL, Shaye Angelo had four goals and an assist, and Sarah McLaughlin had five saves.    [ Story and BOX SCORE] 

VICTOR-21 at WATERTOWN-7 - Victor defeated Watertown 21-7 in a non-league game on Monday. Allie Pisano scored four goals, while Maia Pronti contributed two goals and eight assists.     [ Story and BOX SCORE] 

FAIRPORT-8 at SMITHTOWN WEST-10 - The Red Raiders scored the first four goals of the game and led 8-7 entering the fourth quarter but could not maintain their advantage against a powerful Smithtown West squad. Fairport was out of town and stats were not available at post-time.     [ Story and BOX SCORE]

Saturday Thrillers: Overtime Battles and Milestone Moments

DAY IN REVIEW: SATURDAY - Saturday featured five matchups, with several close contests highlighting the day’s action. Sayville edged Penfield 11-10 in overtime after Penfield rallied from a six-goal second-half deficit to force extra time. Colonie Central secured a 4-3 win over Schroeder in another tightly-contested battle, as Molly Meyer scored twice and Maura Ugine recorded four saves for Schroeder. Bayport-Blue Point topped Victor 13-10 in a non-league matchup between two of New York’s top teams, with Maia Pronti and Allie Pisano each netting three goals for Victor. Pittsford tied Baldwinsville with 10 seconds left in regulation and went on to claim an 8-7 overtime victory. Duxbury defeated Penn Yan 13-9, despite Gianna Voigt scoring her 50th career goal for the Mustangs. 

BAYPORT-BLUE PT-13 at VICTOR-10 - Bayport-Blue Point defeated Victor 13-10 in a non-league game between two of New York's top teams on Saturday. Victor's top scorers were Maia Pronti and Allie Pisano with three goals each. Mia Finocchario recorded eight saves for the Blue Devils in the loss.     [ Story and BOX SCORE]

SAYVILLE-11 at PENFIELD-10 in Double Overtime - Sayville defeated Penfield in an overtime battle, winning by a score of 11 to 10. Penfield overcame a six-goal second-half deficit to tie the game at the end of regulation but was edged out in the extra frame. Avery Fordham led Penfield with three goals. Fairport, Wayne, and Mercy Shine in High-Scoring Wins

DAY IN REVIEW: FRIDAY - Five lacrosse games were played on Friday, highlighted by Fairport's 16-5 win against Thomas in Monroe County action and Wayne's 15-7 non-league victory over Gates Chili. For Fairport, Ellie Miller scored five goals, Camryn DuBose contributed four goals and four assists, and Ella Peers had three goals and two assists along with 10 draw controls. Wayne's offense was led by Lauren Twist with seven goals and two assists, and Isabella Veltre with five goals and three assists. Elsewhere, Irondequoit secured a 9-3 victory over Colonie Central (section II), with goalies Emma Francis and Mia Conine combining for nine saves and eighth-grader Kate Bottiglier scoring her first varsity goal. Livonia-Avon-Geneseo defeated Salamanca (section VI) 16-8, underlined by a performance from Lily Rowe that included five goals, three assists, and eight draw controls. Mercy, featuring eight different goal scorers, routed Waterloo by a score of 16 to 3.

Brighton Wins Thriller

DAY IN REVIEW: THURSDAY - Today's Monroe County lineup featured a total of six games. Brighton edged Rush-Henrietta in a nail-biter, 12-10, with the Bruins' Ireland Mistretta contributing five goals and collecting her 200th career draw control. Pittsford triumphed over Canandaigua 8-5 in a game where the eight Panther goals were scored by eight different players, including first-time goals from Lea Kenney and Presley Imburgia. Spencerport earned a solid 13-7 win against Hilton, fueled by a seven-goal performance by Brooke Endres. Shavonne Callahan led the Saints with five goals and three assists in Churchville-Chili's 14-3 win over Greece Storm. Honeoye Falls-Lima shut out Brockport 16-0, highlighted by Shaye Angelo's six-goal effort and stellar goalkeeping from Sarah McLaughlin. Victor dominated Schroeder 18-1, with 11 Blue Devils lighting the scoring lamp. 

PITTSFORD-8 at CANANDAIGUA-5 - Pittsford triumphed 8-5 over Canandaigua in a Monroe County matchup. Lots of Mismatched Games on Wednesday

DAY IN REVIEW: WEDNESDAY - Mercy secured an 18-7 victory over Aquinas-WOIS, led by Sydney Cook, Mia Quagrello, and Elinor Meyer. Penfield cruised past Fairport, 14-4, as Peyton Rothfuss tallied six points. Geneva, behind eight goals from Velia DeMaria, extended its perfect record to 5-0 with a 17-6 win over Newark-Midlakes. Pal-Mac dominated Mynderse-Romulus, 16-2, with Brinn Castrechini accounting for four goals and two assists. Jessica Maher and Hannah Bonczyk combined for six saves in Brockport's 13-3 victory over Marcus Whitman. No reports were available for Wayne’s 17-5 win against Gananda-Marion. 

AQUINAS-WOIS-7 at MERCY-18 - Mercy triumphed over Aquinas-WOIS, 18-7, with standout performances from Sydney Cook and Mia Quagrello. Eight Mercy players contributed to the scoring, and goalie Elinor Meyer stopped all five shots she faced in her 24 minutes of play. Thrilling Victories and Nail-Biters on Monday

DAY IN REVIEW: MONDAY - Monday`s matchups showcased dominant performances and thrilling finishes across the Finger Lakes and beyond. Waterloo edged Livonia-Avon-Geneseo in an overtime thriller, 13-12; the Tigers were led by a five-goal performance from Maci Mueller and 13 saves from Peyton Lyons. Zoey Overslaugh had six goals and collected 11 draw controls as Newark-Midlakes rolled past Gananda-Marion, 17-5, for its first win of the season. Penn Yan fell just short in a tense 10-9 battle against West Genesee. Rush-Henrietta extended its 10-game winning streak against Hilton with a decisive 17-5 victory. Geneva remained unbeaten after an 11-4 win over Marcus Whitman, and Wayne defeated Brockport 17-6. Lancaster (Section VI) beat Aquinas-WOIS 16-6. 

HILTON-5 at RUSH-HENRIETTA-17 - Rush-Henrietta defeated Hilton 17-5, extending their winning streak against the Cadets to 10. Rush-Henrietta`s standout performances came from Riley Brown (4g/1a), Kate DeWald (4g/2a), and Danielle Garrett (2g/5a). Goalie Taylor Potwin made seven saves for the Royal Comets. GENEVA-11 at MARCUS WHITMAN-4 - Geneva defeated Marcus Whitman 11-4 in a Finger Lakes matchup. Makenna Harris led Geneva with six goals and an assist. WEST GENESEE-10 at PENN YAN-9 - Penn Yan (1-2) came up just short in a non-league clash against West Genesee, falling by a score of 10-9. NEWARK-MIDLAKES-17 at GANANDA-MARION-5 - Newark-Midlakes earned its first win of the season, defeating Gananda-Marion 17-5 in a Finger Lakes game. WATERLOO-13 at LIVONIA-AVON-GENESEO-12 in Overtime - [UPDATED] Waterloo earned a narrow 13-12 win over Livonia-Avon-Geneseo in a competitive Finger Lakes game. Leading the way for Waterloo was Maci Mueller (5g/5a) who scored the winning goal. Lily Rowe and Maddie Whitford led Livonia-Avon-Geneseo with four goals each. 2024 Season Wrap Up

There were thirty teams playing Varsity Girls Lacrosse in Section V. There were 688 players on the final rosters. Brockport carried the largest roster with thirty-one players and Waterloo-Marcus Whitman had the smallest with fourteen. 

There were four classes for the sectional tournaments. Penfield (A), Canandaigua (B), and Mercy (C) and Penn Yan (D) were the top seeded teams.

Fairport beat Rush-Henrietta and Pittsford for their championship. Second-seeded Victor beat Thomas and then Brighton before defeating top-seeded Canandaigua for the Class B Championship. In Class C, Mercy beat Wayne and then HFL in a close game to claim their championship while in Class D, Penn Yan beat Marcus Whitman, Aquinas/WOIS, and Pal-Mac for their title.

The teams were able to play a full season again in 2024. The first games were played on March 25th with Hilton, Spencerport and Schroeder winning their openers. The last regular season game was played on May 16th when Canandaigua defeated Churchville-Chili.

The 262 regular season games were played and the 138 league games determined the league championships.

At the end of the year, the Section V Head Coaches selected the post-season award winners including their All-League players. Then they selected five USA Lacrosse All-Americans and five All-Academics. Named All-Americans were Reagan Diehl (Pal-Mac), Ella Peers (Fairport), Devin Livingston (Victor), Hanna Davis (Canandaigua), and Molly Guzik (Spencerport).

Named All-Academics were Alli Chimenti (Wayne), Katie Mallaber (Fairport), Alyssa Nichols (Spencerport), Angelia Oechsle (Rush-Henrietta), and Lucy Lederman (Brighton).

Honeoye Falls-Lima Head Coach Kevin O`Connell was named Coach of the Year from Section V and the Jackie Pitts Award winner was Zoe Baase from Brockport.

After the regular season, the Section V tournaments were conducted. Fairport (Class A), Victor (Class B), Mercy (Class C) and Penn Yan (Class D) were the Sectional Champions in 2024.

The New York State Tournaments were back in full swing and sectional champions went on to play Section VI champions in the Western Regionals (quarter finals).

In Class A, Fairport beat Lancaster (12-7) and then defeated Massapequa (Section VIII) 10-9, taking them to the finals where they lost to Cicero-North Syracuse (Section III) 12-8.

In Class B, Victor beat Clarence (Section VI) by a score of 22-0. They then beat West Islip (Section XI) 11-10 and defeated West Genesee (Section III) 16-8 to win their third Class B NYS Championship in a row.

In Class C, Our Lady of Mercy won their game against Lake Shore of Section VI 17-8 but then lost to Sayville (Section XI) by a score of 13-8 in the semifinals. Penn Yan beat Gowanda (Section VI) 17-4 before losing to Cold Spring Harbor (Section VIII) 18-4 in the semifinals.

By the end of the season at least sixty-four players had made college commitments. They will become part of over three hundred players from Section V who are currently playing at all college levels.
