Four More Games to Finish Week 3
Two of the four games today were out of Section contests. West Genesee defeated HFL 15-12 and Fayetteville-Manlius defeated Fairport 19-7. The two in-Section contests saw Aquinas defeating Midlakes 16-9 and Waterloo defeating Mynderse 12-9.
Canandaigua only Game on Friday
The Braves played the only game on Friday with the remaining games postponed due to weather. Canandaigua traveled to Ithaca and defeated the Reds 16-6. Natalie Gwynn led in scoring with 3g-3a and Peyton Smith added another 2g-3a. Additional stats are HERE.
Weather Claims More Games
Of the six matches scheduled for today, three were cancelled due to weather. Of the remaining three, Mynderse defeated Midlakes 10-7, Penfield defeated Baldwinsville 7-3 and Marcus Whitman defeated East Rochester 12-2.
Ten Matches: Mostly One Sided
There were ten matches tonight with only 2 games under a 5-goal differential. The closest match of the night was Irondequoit defeated R-H 11-8. Livonia over Gates Chili 12-8 was also under a 5-goal differential. Rounding out the scoring were Waterloo over Gananda 11-3, Pal-Mac over Midlakes 17-2, Victor over HFL 13-8, Penfield over Brockport 15-4, Penn Yan over Mynderse 12-7, Arc/Oly over Eastridge 14-9, Brighton over Fairport 14-6 and Canandaigua over Hilton 15-3.
Smith Leads Braves with 7 Points
Peyton Smith finished with 3g-4a for Canandaigua in their 15-3 win over Hilton. The Braves controlled the majority of the possession time during the contest. They finished the game with 30 shots while holding the Cadets to only 7. They also won the groundball count 31-12.
Tuesday's Games
Two of tonight's games were postponed with three remaining. Aquinas defeated Greece Ath/Ody 16-8 and Waterloo defeated Marcus Whitman 20-10. The Mercy vs. Clarence game is still pending a score.
Mooney Scores in Second Overtime for Pittsford
Ellie Mooney scored with 0:57 remaining in the second overtime period to give Pittsford the 6-5 win over Fairport. The Panthers came back from trailing to force overtime and then secure the victory. The Red Raiders led for the entire game and the first time that Pittsford took the lead was the game winning goal. Pittsford continued their winning streak vs. Fairport, having won the last 14 times that they faced.
Erin Coykendall Scores Game Winner
Spencerport's Erin Coykendall scored the game winning goal with 0:07 remaining on the clock. The Rangers defeated Victor 13-12, for the first time in the program's history. The Rangers and the Blue Devils had faced three previous times with Victor winning each one. The last time they faced was in the Sectional Tournament Finals where the Blue Devils won 18-12 to secure the Class B Title.
Cosgrove Lead Churchville-Chili
Katie Cosgrove finished with 5g in Churchville Chili's 11-9 win over Hilton. The Saints scored five unanswered goals in to end the first half and start the second half to take an 8-4 lead that the Cadets could not fight back against. Hilton pulled the game within one goal twice, but could not tie the game. Amanda Hilderbrandt and Jenna Ricotta each scored four goals for the Cadets. The ninth goal was scored by Sydney Carpenter. Hilderbrandt also led her team with 4 draw contorls and 3 ground balls. Defenseman Josephine Ban recorded 2 caused turnovers. In the cage, Shaina Doser recorded 12 saves.
Multiple Close Games
Eight more games were played tonight with half being decided by less than two points. The closest game of the night was Pittsford's 6-5 overtime win over Fairport. Spencerport also defeated Victor 13-12, Thomas over RH 9-8 and Churchville Chili over Hilton 11-9. In addition, Penfield defeated Schroeder 11-6, Brighton defeated Baldwinsville 10-5, Livonia defeated Newark 9-6 and Gananda defeated Wayne 5-1.
Section Five Announces New Seeding Procedure
Section Five Chairman Al DeCarlo has announced that for 2017, the Girls of Section Five will adopt the seeding system that has been used by the boys for the past 15 years. Due to changes occurring at LaxPower.com (the former seeding system), Chairman DeCarlo and the rest of the committee determined that it was necessary to identify a new way to seed the Sectional Tournament.
New Sectional Seeding for 2017
Due to changes made at LaxPower.com, the Girls Section Five Committee needed to identify a way to seed their Sectional Tournament. Chairman Al DeCarlo reached out to his counterpart in the Boys Section Five Committee and discussed how the Boys seed their tournament. After further discussions with additional leadership in Section Five, it was determined that the Girls would switch their seeding in 2017 to the system used by the Boys.
End of Week #2
There were 24 games played in the first two weeks of games in Section Five. There are still six teams that have yet to play a game, but most teams have seen the field at least once. Four teams already have 3 games under their belts. In addition to the summary of stories, the first round of Sectional Seeding information was released today and can be found below.

Biggest Day of the Season
Eight games were played in Section Five today with seven games reporting on their scores. Aquinas defeated Geneva 16-6, Churchville-Chili defeated Pal-Mac 13-6, South Jefferson defeated HFL 9-5, Penfield defeated Irondequoit 9-6, Spencerport defeated Fairport 11-9, Newark defeated East Rochester 11-8, Mercy defeated Midlakes 15-4. The RH vs. Hamburg score has yet to be reported.
Choate and Coykendall Secure Win for Spencerport
For the third time in as many years the Spencerport vs Fairport game was decided by two goals or less. The Ranger's got revenge after last year's 7-6 overtime loss to the Red Raiders (HERE). Spencerport defeated Fairport 11-9 after scoring three of the last four goals. Natalie Choate (5g-1a) and Erin Coykendall (1g-5a) were instrumental in the Ranger's victory.
South Jefferson defeats HFL
Section III team South Jefferson travelled out to Honeoye Falls-Lima to face for the fourth time in the last four years. South Jefferson won 9-5 over the Cougars. The Spartans have won the last three years after dropping the first game to HFL 9-6 in 2014.
Two Games on Friday
Of the four games scheduled for today, two were postponed. Penn Yan hosted Lake Shore and fell to the Eagles 13-11. At this time, only the score was reported. Additional stats will be updated HERE.
Two Close Game of Three
Aquinas defeated Waterloo 9-8 in a close contest, RH defeated Mercy 9-8 and Schroeder defeated Gates Chili 17-3.
Smolensky Lead Brighton in Win
Kathryn Smolensky finished with 3g-2a in Brighton's 12-6 win over Penfield. The Barons scored ten goals straight before Penfield scored the final three goals during a single yellow card against Brighton. The Patriots came out of the gate strong and scored the opening two goals. Lindsay Hernady scored unassisted on fast-break goal only 0:26 into the contest. Two minutes later Chelsea Atkins fed the ball to a cutting Megan Motkowski to give the Patriots a 2-0 lead with 22:46 left in the first half. Brighton followed with two of their own. Rene Gangarosa assisted Smolensky for the opening goal and two minutes later Gangarosa scored unassisted. Her goal came after she picked up her own rebound directly on the crease and scored on the strong second effort. Penfield third goal was scored with Brighton's goalie out of position and Lucy Rugaber feeding across the cage to Madigan Lublin.
Four Games on Wednesday
With three scores in, Livonia defeated Midlakes 12-6, Mynderse defeated Greece Ath/Ody 11-5, Brighton defeated Penfield 12-6 and Newark defeated Eastridge 5-4.
Sherwood's Feeds Give Irondequoit the Win
Erika Sherwood finished with four assists in Irondequoit's 7-6 win over Mercy tonight. Sherwood was the driving force behind the come from behind win. The Monarchs took an early 4-1 lead in the first half before the Eagles scored four unanswered goals (three assisted by Sherwood) to take the 5-4 lead less than 3 minutes into the second half. The Eagles continued to play solid defense and not take too many chances and held off Mercy's late attempts to tie the game.
Three More Games
Tonight there were three more games. Irondequoit defeated Mercy 7-6 in a comeback win. Aquinas defeated Arc/Oly 15-5 and RH travelled to West Genesee were the Wildcats won 11-6.
First multi-game day in Section Five
Three more games were played today with Wayne winning a close game 7-5 over Eastridge, Mynderse defeating Newark 17-4 and Brighton topping Hilton 20-6. Tomorrow has another 3 games scheduled.
