Thomas Defense Steps up in Overtime Win

- In the second game of the tournament where the lower seed won, #5 Thomas defeated #4 Irondequoit 10-9 in double overtime.  The Titans` defense was stellar and they were the keystone to their victory.  Sophmore Keyal Bay, juniors Julia Nicolosi and Grace Lagoner and senior Allison Barnes and junior goalie Haley Barrett deserve more press than they will receive.  The five close defenseman, along with their midfield counterparts were beyond impressive in today`s contest.  In addition to the defense, junior midfielder Emily Glagolev had a stand-out day at the draw.  She finished with 10 draw controls for the Titans.

The game began with Glagolev winning the opening draw (and setting the tone for her whole game).  The Titan offense lost the ball within 30 seconds and Irondequoit cleared the ball up field.  The next six minutes were all Irondequoit offense and all Thomas defense.  The Titans turned back drive after drive.  They slid to cover players that we beaten, and then covered their slide to stop a quick pass.  They repeatedly kept the Eagles away from the goal.  Eventually, they got the ball back on offense and scored with a feed across the crease from Nicole Voci to Glagolev.  Three minutes later, the Eagles scored their opening goal.  Annie Brennan demonstrated why she was a star for the Eagles and forced her way past the triple team and found the back of the net.  Brennan's goal was one of only three goals that were scored on the set defense for the Titans.  Glagolev scored her second goal less than a minute later after an inside dodge at the crease.  The Titans led 2-1 with 13:59 left in the first quarter.

Irondequoit scored the next four goals to take a 5-2 lead over the Titans.  If only the scoring table was present, a completely different story comes to light.  The first of the four goals was scored on a free position shot from the 8 meter.  The next three were all scored during man-up play for Irondequoit.  The contest was tightly called by the officials.  There were five yellow cards (including a fouled out player from each team) and an uncountable number of major fouls. Leah O`Sullivan scored three of the four goals and Celina Alvarado scored the fourth.  After the run, the teams trading goals.  Thomas scored on their own man-up situation with Rebecca Schaefer assisting Tomei.  Irondequoit went back up with another yellow (and the Thomas player fouled out).  Kiersten Pease scored her long goal with a feed from Marina Butler.  Pease, although only scoring one goal, was a major leader for the Eagles in the second half.  The final goal of the half was scored by Abby Quinland with a feed from Mary Soures.  The Eagles led 6-4 at the half.

In the second half, Thomas came out swingng and scored three more goals to take the 7-6 lead.  All three goals were scored by Soures.  The first was a fast-break goal that began with a defense heads-up loose ball pick-up by Quinnland.  The second was a dodge from the left side and the third was off a loose ball on the crease.  Freshman Maria Brennan scored the tying goal off a free position shot with 12:02 remianing.  Senior Annie Brennan scored her second goal with an impressive sweep from the top and a shot to the upper corner for the second set offense goal from the Eagles.  Shortly after Brennan's goal, the Irondequoit players fouled-out.  It took nearly five minutes for the Titans to tie the game.  Voci scored on a free position goal to tie at 8-8 with 6:04 remaining.

Irondequoit took their final lead with 3:03 on the clock.  Butler took the ball after a dead ball missed shot and wrapped around the back of the cage to score for the Eagles.  The Eagles held the lead for most of the final three minutes.  Thomas gained possession with 1:16 remaining in the regulation and tried to force overtime.  They succeeded with 0:21 on the clock when Gabriella Vasile found Voci open inside the crease.  The Eagles won the final draw, but could not convert.

The game went to the first overtime.  Quinlan won the draw for Thomas, but the Titans lost the ball before taking a shot.  Irondequoit took possession with 2:01 remaining in the first overtime.  They held the ball for the majority, going for the final shot.  They were unsucessful, partially due to continued strong performances from the Titan defense.  In the second overtime period, Irondequoit won the draw with Quinn Melidona picking up the ball.  The ball travelled the midfield for nearly a minute with neither team in full possession.  The Eagles ended up with the ball with 2:05 remaining and were clearing when a charge call sent the ball back to the Titans.  Quinland scored the assist on the game winning with an inside fed to Glagolev.  She caught the ball and she was almost past the goal.  She stutter-stepped and caught the goalie out of position.  They scored with 0:55 remaining.  After the game winning goal, Irondequoit requested a stick check; however, the stick was legal and the Titan secured the win.

The Titans continue on to play the top seeded Spencerport Rangers in the 5:00 game on May 27th at Sutherland.
