Brighton Wins Sixth Straight

- Brighton scored nine of the first ten goals in their 13-5 win over HFL.  Brighton scored the opening goal, and although the Cougars tied at 1-1, the Barons never trailed.  The first three goals were all scored off the 8m line.  For Brighton, Kathryn Smolensky and Eleanor Burns scored.  Brittany Chamberlain scored the first goal for HFL.

The Barons kept up the pressure, taking off large chunks of the clock with possession time before going to the goal and scoring.  There were two goals that stood out for Brighton.  The first was a textbook give and go beginning with Caroline Lederman.  She came up the field on a fast-break before finding Susan Lafountain on the flat.  The defense shifted allowing Lederman to continue her drive to the cage.  Lafountain sent the ball back for the assist.  The second stand out goal was a third attempt at the cage in less than 5 seconds by Smolensky.  After two quick saves from Bridgete Kiefer, Smolensky picked up a loose ball on the crease and finished into the back of the net.

HFL scored four of their five goals off the 8m line.  In total, they had fifteen attempts at the line.  They only took shots on seven of those (with 4 goals).  Many times, the Cougars held the ball too long and either drew a second foul, or had the ball knocked out by Brighton.  Payton Reed and Chamberlain both finished with 2 goals.  Chamberlain also finished with 3 draw controls to lead HFL.

For Brighton, Piper Davis continued to have success at the draw.  She finished with a team leading five draw controls, but was responsible for controlling the location of the ball coming out in more than that.  Her team finished 14/19 at the draw with Burns (4) and Rene Gangarosa (3) adding to the count.  In the cage for Brighton, Mary Claire George played strong game with 5 recorded saves.  She made 2 of the saves off the 8m line.  Erika Sobol played the final 10 minutes, but did not record a save.

Brighton’s next contest is a battle of 2 of the 3 undefeated teams remaining in the Section.  Brighton (6-0) faces Pittsford (6-0) on Thursday at Pittsford Sutherland.  The game will be the first of a double header with the Pittsford Boys facing defending State Champion Victor in the second matchup.  Both matches look to be close and will be must see games for local lacrosse fans.
