Smith Leads Canandigua to Victory

- Second seeded Canandaigua scored five unanswered goals to take the lead late in the first half and never let up in their 11-7 win over seventh seeded Schroeder.  The Warriors kept up their play until the end; but every time they attempted to tie the game, the Braves had a response.  The turning point of the game came at 10:47 with Peyton Smith’s third goal of the game.  She scored on a broken clear that turned the momentum from in favor of the Warriors to squarely with the Braves.  Smith led the offense with 4g-1a and was a major factor during the defensive clearing ride.

Canandaigua scored the first goal of the game with Natalie Gwynn assisting Smith 6:08 into the contest.  Schroeder responded with three unanswered goals to take the 3-1 lead with 14:24 remaining.  All three goals were scored over a period of 3 minutes when they scored, won the draw, and kept possession away from the Braves.  Peyton Lill was a major factor at the draw and finished with 8 draw controls for Schroeder.  The first two Warrior goals were assisted by Madison Bell, with goals to Abby Moon and Lill.  Lill scored the third goal herself off the 8m line.  Canandaigua took another 4 minutes to score their second goal; however, they then added another four goals in the next ten minutes.  Lexi Braniecki scored off an inside feed into traffic by Smith.  The next goal was scored off a ground ball on the crease by Megan Hoffman.  Hoffman took an earlier shot that was saved by Jorden Concordia (Schroeder), but not controlled.  She grabbed her own groundball and finished on the second shot.  Concordia had another strong game and finished with 11 saves.

The next three Brave goals were scored off an 8m shot (LaRen Blakesley) and two single player drives by Gwynn and Smith.  Schroeder added one more goal with 0:02 remaining in the half.  Moon grabbed the draw control and looked up to Lill, who drove straight at the cage.  Canandaigua led 6-4 at the half.

The Braves increased their lead to 7-4 with another inside feed from Gwynn to Braniecki.  Schroeder pushed hard to stay in the game and scored three of the next four to pull within a single goal twice.  However, they could not force the tie and the three goals were their final points.  Moon, Kelsey Nelson and Lill scored the last three goals.  With the score 8-7, the Braves had possession of the ball on offense and were looking to go back up by 2.  They were patient and eventually took a shot at the cage. Concordia came up with a big save and attempted to push the ball back to their offense.  During the clear, in when Smith broke the clear and scored to put the Braves back on top and break the momentum that the Warriors were building.  Canandiagua scored their 10th goal just over 1 minute later with a feed from behind the cage from Lindsey Reho to Smith.  Concordia was out of position attempting to intercept the ball and gave Smith the easy cross-cage shot.  After going up by three, the Braves slowed the pace of the game and held on for the victory.

In addition to leading in draw controls, Lill led in groundballs with 4.  Concordia also finished with 3 interceptions for the Warriors.  For Canandaigua, Clancy Rheude led in draw controls with 2.  Gwynn led in groundballs with 4.  Between the pipes, Izzy Kenyon also had a strong performance.  She finished with 10 recorded saves, including a number of 8m saves to keep her team in the lead through the second half.
