Waterloo Scores Seven Straight to Start Second Half
Wayne hosted their fifth annual “Cradle for a Cure” event today. Waterloo defeated the Eagles 17-9. The “Cradle for a Cure” event began five years ago as a fundraising/awareness event after a local lacrosse player received a cancer diagnosis. Every year since, Wayne has hosted a multigame event with boys and girls lax with the hope of donating to both local charities and a local family in need of assistance. After this game, the Boys hosted Gananda and defeated the Panthers 23-5 (HERE).
The game was close for a half before Waterloo pulled away. The Indians scored the opening goal and never trailed in the contest. Less than one minute into play, Devon Reese scored after scooping up a loose ball on the crease. Wayne responded with Mary Panepento scoring the first of her 3g. She scored with a fast-break directly off the draw. She recorded a total of 3 draw controls. Waterloo scored the next four goals to go up 5-1. Riley Corey scored off an inside feed from Logan Castiglione followed shortly thereafter by another inside feed from Aubrey O’Brein to Emily Smith. Reese scored her second goal with another loose ball on the crease that she put into the back of the net. The fourth goal was an 8m goal by Smith.
Wayne, trailing by four, scored the next three goals to pull back within one. Jillian Pembroke scored the first of her two goals followed by Casey Hibbard scoring on a fast-break. Panepento scored her second off an 8m shot after Waterloo received a yellow card. Each team added a single goal to end the half. The Indians led 7-6 at the half.
In the second half, Waterloo scored the first seven goals of the half. One key to their increase in scoring came from their increase in draw controls. In the first half, Wayne won 8/14 and in the second half, Waterloo won 9/13. Defensive midfielder Aubrey O’Brien finished with 3a for the Indians and a team leading seven draw controls. She also had a large impact defensively. She recorded 2 interceptions and a take. Emily Smith, in addition to her 5g-1a, also recorded three interceptions. Angela Cowles played the majority of the game and recorded 7 saves. Taylor Fairman played the final 2:29 and recorded two back-to-back saves in the final seconds.
For Wayne, Bailey Jenkins stood out defensively. She recorded 1 interception and 3 takes. She also led her team in draw controls with five. Non-statistically, she and Tiffany Schaumberg both had standout plays turning away Waterloo offensive drives. In the cage, Morgan Osbourne recorded six saves.
