Gates Chili Secures First Win of the Season

Gates Chili earned its first victory of the season, taking a 9-7 decision over Brockport in a Monroe County game on Thursday night. The teams were tied at five at halftime but the Spartans outscored the Blue Devils four goals to two in the second half to claim the victory. Molly McJury led Brockport (2-5) with four goals, and Jessica Maher had 11 saves. Gates Chili (1-5) did not submit a statistical report by post-time.

Both teams take to the road for their next games, with the Blue Devils visiting Eastridge/BK on Friday and the Spartans traveling to Honeoye Falls-Lima for a contest against the Cougars on Monday.

Close Wins: Geneva, Mynderse-Romulus, and Rush-Henrietta Prevail

DAY IN REVIEW: WEDNESDAY - Wednesday’s slate featured several thrilling matchups. Geneva secured a nail-biting 16-15 win over Livonia-Avon-Geneseo, thanks to Evelyn Little’s game-winner in the fourth quarter. Mynderse-Romulus edged Wayne 9-8 for its first victory of the season. Rush-Henrietta pulled off a 10-8 comeback win over Irondequoit, with Danielle Garrett sealing the game with a clutch fourth-quarter goal. Elsewhere, Thomas defeated Schroeder 7-4, Penn Yan fell to Ithaca 13-8, and Victor, Pal-Mac, Mercy, Waterloo, Churchville-Chili, Aquinas-WOIS, and Canandaigua all scored decisive victories.

WAYNE-8 at MYNDERSE-ROMULUS-9 - Mynderse-Romulus earned its first victory of the season, narrowly defeating Wayne 9-8 in a Finger Lakes matchup. CANANDAIGUA-18 at HILTON-11 - Canandaigua defeated Hilton 18-11 in a Monroe County lacrosse game. The Gray Wolves were led by Taylor Ennis-Chinn and Keira Gioseffi, each of whom recorded four goals and an assist. Geneva Triumphs in Non-League Showdown at Eastridge

Geneva secured a 14-10 victory over Eastridge/BK in a non-league game on Tuesday night, improving its undefeated record to 6-0. The Panthers were led by Meghan Forbes (5g/4a), Makenna Harris (5g/3a), and Velia DeMaria (2g/3a). Evelyn Little and Allison Marquart rounded out the scoring with a goal apiece.

Eastridge/BK fought hard in its season opener but fell short. Leading the scoring for Eastridge/BK were Neely Hawn (4g) and Ada Krupa (3g/1a). Ninth-grader Callie McCullough had two goals, including the first of her varsity career. Eighth-grader Maize Wilner collected eight draw controls. Goalie Mikayla Kaczor recorded six saves in 48 minutes of play.

The series history between the teams is now tied at two wins apiece. Both teams will look to build on their performances in upcoming games, with the Panthers heading to Livonia-Avon-Geneseo on Wednesday, and Eastridge/BK hosting Brockport on Friday.

Close Calls and Commanding Wins

DAY IN REVIEW: MONDAY - Monday's lacrosse action showcased eight games, including a nail-biting 14-13 overtime win by Victor over Brighton, with Julia Bruno scoring the game-winning goal, and standout performances from Victor's McKenna Anderson and Maia Pronti as well as Brighton's Ireland Mistretta and Ella Brunette. Canandaigua continued its dominance over Thomas with a hard-fought 10-7 victory; the Gray Wolves were led by Leah Sheridan, who had four goals and two assists. In the remaining six games, Spencerport, Greece Storm, Penfield, Rush-Henrietta, Fairport, and Churchville-Chili all scored decisive victories.

Penn Yan Edges Canandaigua in Thrilling Match

DAY IN REVIEW: SATURDAY - Penn Yan edged Canandaigua 9-8 in a non-league matchup on Saturday. Ruby Berry led the Mustangs with five goals. Bailey Cooper and Makenna Mullins added two goals apiece. For Canandaigua, Leah Sheridan had three goals, and Aviana Nelson recorded 12 saves.

CANANDAIGUA-8 at PENN YAN-9 - Penn Yan narrowly defeated Canandaigua 9-8 in a non-league game on Saturday morning. Junior Ruby Berry led the way for Penn Yan with five goals, including the 50th goal of her varsity career. Supporting Berry were Bailey Cooper, who tallied two goals and an assist, and Makenna Mullins, who added two goals. Maihue Miranda-Wiltberger recorded seven draw controls for the Mustangs, whose record improves to 3-4. The win was Penn Yan's first over the Gray Wolves since 2007.

For Canandaigua, Leah Sheridan topped the scoresheet with three goals and an assist. Lola Schorr had two goals and an assist. Keira Gioseffi, Taylor Ennis-Chinn, and Samantha Lupton rounded out the scoring for the Gray Wolves. In goal, senior Aviana Nelson was a standout, making 12 saves. With the loss, Canandaigua's record drops to 3-2.

Two Ultra Close Games on the Road Today

DAY IN REVIEW: WEDNESDAY - A thrilling day of lacrosse featured five games, including two nail-biters. Penn Yan edged Hingham 12-11 with a clutch last-second goal. Cold Spring Harbor earned a hard-fought overtime 8-7 win over Fairport, despite 10 saves by Marisa Test. Elsewhere, Penfield triumphed 12-3 over Irondequoit, Rush-Henrietta overpowered Corning 15-4, and Pittsford extended its undefeated streak to four with an .8-4 win over Bethlehem. 

PENFIELD-12 at IRONDEQUOIT-3 - Penfield defeated Irondequoit 12-3 in a Monroe County lacrosse game at Irondequoit. Peyton Rothfuss led Penfield with three goals and four assists. DAY IN REVIEW: TUESDAY - Thomas secured a 10-9 home victory over Bethlehem in a close non-league matchup. Molly Slack led the Titans with five goals, and goalkeeper Morgan Weber made six saves. It was the Titans' first win of the season. Wayne lost for the first time this season, dropping an 18-9 decision to Jordan-Elbridge despite the efforts of Isabella Veltre and Madelyn Hillman, who combined for four goals and four assists.

Monday's Lacrosse Showdowns: Nail-Biters and Standouts

DAY IN REVIEW: MONDAY - Today's lacrosse games featured thrillingly close matches. Canandaigua’s 10-9 overtime win over Honeoye Falls-Lima featured standout performances from the Gray Wolves' Lola Schorr and the Cougars' Shaye Angelo. In Mercy’s 10-9 victory over Irondequoit, the Monarchs' Mia Quagrello and the Eagles' Grace Bottiglier each had four goals. Fairport and Penn Yan both came up short in their games, the Red Raiders dropping a 10-8 decision against Smithtown West and the Mustangs falling to Cohasset by a score of 12-8.  

CANANDAIGUA-10 at HONEOYE FALLS-LIMA-9 - Canandaigua eked out a 10-9 overtime victory over HFL in a Monroe County lacrosse matchup on Monday. 2024 Season Wrap Up

There were thirty teams playing Varsity Girls Lacrosse in Section V. There were 688 players on the final rosters. Brockport carried the largest roster with thirty-one players and Waterloo-Marcus Whitman had the smallest with fourteen. 

There were four classes for the sectional tournaments. Penfield (A), Canandaigua (B), and Mercy (C) and Penn Yan (D) were the top seeded teams.

Fairport beat Rush-Henrietta and Pittsford for their championship. Second-seeded Victor beat Thomas and then Brighton before defeating top-seeded Canandaigua for the Class B Championship. In Class C, Mercy beat Wayne and then HFL in a close game to claim their championship while in Class D, Penn Yan beat Marcus Whitman, Aquinas/WOIS, and Pal-Mac for their title.

The teams were able to play a full season again in 2024. The first games were played on March 25th with Hilton, Spencerport and Schroeder winning their openers. The last regular season game was played on May 16th when Canandaigua defeated Churchville-Chili.

The 262 regular season games were played and the 138 league games determined the league championships.

At the end of the year, the Section V Head Coaches selected the post-season award winners including their All-League players. Then they selected five USA Lacrosse All-Americans and five All-Academics. Named All-Americans were Reagan Diehl (Pal-Mac), Ella Peers (Fairport), Devin Livingston (Victor), Hanna Davis (Canandaigua), and Molly Guzik (Spencerport).

Named All-Academics were Alli Chimenti (Wayne), Katie Mallaber (Fairport), Alyssa Nichols (Spencerport), Angelia Oechsle (Rush-Henrietta), and Lucy Lederman (Brighton).

Honeoye Falls-Lima Head Coach Kevin O`Connell was named Coach of the Year from Section V and the Jackie Pitts Award winner was Zoe Baase from Brockport.

After the regular season, the Section V tournaments were conducted. Fairport (Class A), Victor (Class B), Mercy (Class C) and Penn Yan (Class D) were the Sectional Champions in 2024.

The New York State Tournaments were back in full swing and sectional champions went on to play Section VI champions in the Western Regionals (quarter finals).

In Class A, Fairport beat Lancaster (12-7) and then defeated Massapequa (Section VIII) 10-9, taking them to the finals where they lost to Cicero-North Syracuse (Section III) 12-8.

In Class B, Victor beat Clarence (Section VI) by a score of 22-0. They then beat West Islip (Section XI) 11-10 and defeated West Genesee (Section III) 16-8 to win their third Class B NYS Championship in a row.

In Class C, Our Lady of Mercy won their game against Lake Shore of Section VI 17-8 but then lost to Sayville (Section XI) by a score of 13-8 in the semifinals. Penn Yan beat Gowanda (Section VI) 17-4 before losing to Cold Spring Harbor (Section VIII) 18-4 in the semifinals.

By the end of the season at least sixty-four players had made college commitments. They will become part of over three hundred players from Section V who are currently playing at all college levels.
