South Jefferson defeats HFL

Section III team South Jefferson travelled out to Honeoye Falls-Lima to face for the fourth time in the last four years.  South Jefferson won 9-5 over the Cougars.  The Spartans have won the last three years after dropping the first  game to HFL 9-6 in 2014.

The Spartans scored the first two goals of the game and never trailed in the win.  Molly Hall and Mara Hathaway (assisted by Sydney Roderick) scored the opening volley to put South Jefferson into the lead.  HFL's Jill Sullivan scored the first goal of the season for HFL with an unassisted drive to the cage.  Each team added one more goal before Roderick scored the final goal of the first half unassisted with only 0:12 remaining on the clock.  South Jefferson led 4-2 at the half.

The Spartans came out in the second half and added another two goals.  Mackenzie Alexander (assist to Roderick) and Hall scored.  With 11:07 remaining on the clock, Brittany Chamberlain scored off a feed from Caitlin Muir.  Muir drove from behind the cage, forcing a slide to an open Camberlain across the crease.  Less than one minute later, Alyssa Stevenson scored for the Spartans with a strong single player effort.  She pulled out her defender and did a one-on-one dodge to the cage.  Three minutes later and Megan Whitley did a very similar one-on-one dodge to the goal.

The Cougars never gave up and scored the next two goals.  Paige Smith scored off a cut to the crease and feed from Sullivan behind the crease.  The final Cougar goal was an impressive display of teamwork with Muir and Camberlain hooking up on the crease once again.  After the final HFL goal, the Spartans took control of the ball and the pace.  They spent a significant portion of the final minutes holding the ball with the Cougars unable to get possession.  The final goal of the game was scored with most defensive players out of position attempting to get the ball.  Savannah Fish scored for the Spartans.

In the cage for HFL, Bridgete Kiefer recorded six saves.  South Jefferson goalie Kadi Bice finished at 50% with five recorded saves.
