Goodermote Dominate in C-C Win
Paulina Goodermote was an impressive defensive force for Churchville-Chili in their 14-8 win over Lake Shore. Her final stats showed 12 saves and 8 goals against (60%); however, that doesn’t even begin to show how she actually played. The final five shots she faced were all goals as Lake Shore attempted to pull back into the game. With 10 minutes remaining in the game she was 12/15 (80%). She also had 3 ground balls and an interception in the cage. Of her 12 saves, four were off 8m free position shots. The offense was certainly important for the victory, but Goodermote was the key.
Offensively, Katie Cosgrove led in scoring with 5g-2a. Two of her goals were off 8m goals and she was responsible for 2 of the 3 total assists for the Saints. Nina Orlowsi finished with four draws herself and took a majority of the center draws, sending the ball to her teammates. She had a stronger first half than second (8/12 in the first, 3/9 in the second).
Churchville-Chili opened the scoring with the first nine goals. The Saints scored on their first seven regular shots on cage. The first goal, scored 0:36 into the contest, was scored off a fast-break started by Cosgrove. She came down the field and fed to Maddy Marsh on the crease. Marsh scored the first and last goals with similar catches directly on the crease. The Saints continued the press with eight more goals. Lake Shore scored their first goal with 4:53 remaining in the first half. Shayla Scanlan drove to the cage and fought through a triple team before passing across the crease to Jalyn Jimerson. Scanlan was the most demonstrative player on the Eagles. She finished with 3g-1a, 5 draw controls, 2 caused turnovers and five ground balls. She led her team in each of those categories. Three minutes later, Scanlan scored her first goal with a fast break goal off a feed from Sophia Koenig. The first half ended with Churchville-Chili leading 9-2.
The game was much closer in the second half with Lake Shore stepping up their game and Churchville-Chili having issues keeping up the intensity they had in the first half. The Eagles actually won the second quarter 6-5 (the final two Churchville-Chili goals were scored when Lake Shore was pressing to get another shot on offense). The penultimate Churchville-Chili goal was scored by Cosgrove. The Saints were pulled out attempting to stall and her defenseman pressed her all the way to the restraining line. Cosgrove easily stepped past her and drove straight to the cage. The final goal was scored very similarly to the first goal with a fast-break feed to Marsh. This time, Kayla Wiest fed the ball. Wiest came up all the way from the defense and drove to the cage. After the slide, she found Marsh on the crease.
