West Genesee Defeats HFL

West Genesee traveled to HFL this afternoon and defeated the Cougars 11-5.  After a close first half, West Genesee pulled ahead in the second half off a pair of man-up goals in the final ten minutes.

HFL struggled at the draw with West Genesee winning 12/18 draws.  Leading the charge for the Wildcats was Mackenzie Meager with 7 draw controls.  Elizabeth Baker recorded the other 5 draws for West Genesee.  For the Cougars, Junior, Eliza Wild recorded half her team’s draws (3).  The Wildcats opened the scored with an 8m goal from Elise Mancabelli.  They recorded two 8m goals on the night off of nine opportunities.  HFL goalie, Bridgete Kiefer recorded 2 of her 4 total saves off of 8m shots.

HFL responded with back to back goals to take the lead.  The first was an 8m of their own by Lexie Ruff.  The second was a feed from behind the cage to a cutter on the crease.  Jill Sullivan, who finished with 2g-1a, got her assist with a feed to Kierin Ratliff.  The Cougars led 2-1 with 17:43 remaining.  West Genesee responded with four unanswered goals to go up 5-2.  All four goals were assisted goals, usually off a drive to the cage and then an inside feed after the defensive slide.  Their third goal of the game came off an impressive drive and feed by Matisyn Schaut.  Schaut finished with 3g-1a for the Wildcats.  HFL scored the final goal of the opening half with another 8m goal.  Wild scored with 4:31 remaining in the half and brought the halftime score to 5-3 West Genesee.

In the second half, West Genesee scored first with a goal from Schaut 1:15 into the half.  Five minutes later, Sullivan scored her first goal off a drive from behind the cage.  HFL trailed by two (6-4) with 18:35 remaining in the contest.  West Genesee kept up the pressure and scored the next four goals.  An impressive give and go by Schaut led to her third goal of game.  This was quickly followed up by the two man-goals noted above and the Wildcats pulled to a 9-4 lead with time winding down.  With 4:29 remaining, Meager scored her only goal of the game with a drive down the middle of the field through multiple defenders.  Sullivan scored the final goal for the Cougars with an unassisted drive to the cage.  The final goal of the game was an 8m goal from Eliza MacCaull.  HFL’s first in-section contest comes next Thursday against Penfield.
