Ratliff's Four Goals Lift HF-L to Victory
Kierin Ratliff scored 4 goals to lift HF-L to a 9-8 victory over Churchville-Chili. The game was evenly matched with the game tying at all but 8-8. The lead changed 6 times with both teams leading for significant parts of the game. The pace of the game changed in the second half with HF-L scoring three goals in a row (the only time either team scored more than two in a row) to take and keep the lead.
In addition to the offensive scoring, there were a number of strong defensive plays from both teams. Defenseman Abbey Searing from HF-L and attackman Caitlin Muir both had impressive defensive takes at key parts of the game. For C-C, Junior Ilia Bagley and midfielder Mara Zimmerman both played extremely strong defense. Zimmerman was also a major factor at the draw with 5 D/Cs for the Saints. Junior midfielder Katie Cosgrove also had 5 D/Cs for C-C. Overall, they won 11/19 draws.
The game began with an unassisted goal from Cheyenne Clark for the Saints. HF-L came back and scored the next two goals with Ratliff and Muir scoring. The Cougar's lead was short lived with Zimmerman scoring her first goal only 1:34 later with an unassisted drive towards the goal. C-C took their second lead of the game with Zimmerman's second goal three minutes later. With 5:39 remaining in the first half, Ratliff scored her second goal off an impressive feed from Bailey Reed. Reed sent the ball into the crease and found a cutting Ratliff just outside the crease. Ratliff scored her third goal off a fast-break with Jill Sullivan running down the field and finding her open near the crease again. The final goal of the first half was scored by Clark to tie the game at 4-4.
The second half was much like the first with multiple lead changes and both teams playing strong defense. HFL scored the first goal 1:35 into the quarter with Sage Sanford scoring her lone goal (assisted by Muir). C-C scored back to back goals to take a 6-5 lead. Cosgrove fed the ball to Skylar Burlee on the crease followed by Cosgrove scoring unassisted with a drive all the way from the midfield line.
Muir scored her final goal of the game with a drive around the left side of the cage to keep to the game for the 6th time at 6-6. Cosgrove, scored her second goal of the game with a drive into five defenders and a spinning shot past the goalie with 16:11 remaining. Three minutes later, HF-L began their three goal stretch. Ratliff scored the first goal with a drive from behind the cage to tie the game. The go-ahead goal came from Sullivan with a drive along the right side and the final goal was scored with an inside feed from Muir to Bailey Reed.
With 3:51 remaining, the Cougars led by two (the largest lead of the game). They began to hold the ball to try and stall out the clock. Attackman Gretta Kolmer had an impressive interception for the Saints that gave them a change to get back in the game. The ball was cleared and less than 10 seconds into their offensive possession, Bagley scored off a feed from Zimmerman with 2:07 left on the clock. The next draw was imperative for both teams to set the pace. Sophomore Payton Reed came up with her third draw-control of the day to give the Cougars the ball and secure the win. They held the ball for 2:07 and the Saints could not get enough pressure to get the ball back.
In the cage for HF-L, Jessica Apthrope and Jessica Mitchell split halves. Apthrope finished with 1 save and Mitchell finished with 3 saves. For C-C, Paulina Goodermote finished with 9 saves and had an impressive day between the pipes. She had a number of strong saves for 8 meter shots to keep the score close.
