Irondequoit's Melidona and Butler are Keys in Victory

Midfielder Quinn Melidona and attackman Marina Butler were both key figures in Irondequoit's 10-8 win over Rush-Henrietta.  The Eagles led for nearly the entire contest with R-H only tying the game briefly 4-4 early in the second half.  Butler finished the game with 1g-3a and Melidona was a force on defense for the Eagles.  Four different players scored two goals for Irondequoit with Celina Alvarado, Annie Brennan, Kiersten Pease and Erika Sherwood scoring.

The first two goals of the contest were scored by Irondequoit.  Both goals were inside feeds from Butler to Alvardo and Pease.  RH got on the board with an impressive drive to the cage from Gabby Garrett.  Garrett led in scoring for the Royal Comets with 1g-2a.  Sherwood scored the next goal during a fast-break drive at the cage with 16:45 remaining in the first half.  Another one-on-one drive came from Maddy George to keep R-H within one.  The last Eagle goal of the half was scored with Butler's third assist from to a cutting teammate; this time she fed Brennan.  Defenseman Destinee Johnson started the next play with a defensive interception for R-H.  The ball was cleared up and Garrett passed the ball to Ashley Jelfo for the goal.  Irondequoit held a one goal lead at halftime (4-3).

R-H opened the half with a goal to tie the game for the first time.  Garrett fed the ball from behind the cage to Kate Mashewske for her lone goal.  Mashewske had a strong day the draw and finished with four draw controls for the Royal Comets.  After the first tie of the day, Irondequoit took the game in hand and scored three unanswered to set the pace for the rest of the game.  Alvarado scored unassisted followed by back to back goals assisted by Brennan (scoring by Hailey Mroczek and Pease).

Johnson got on the scoreboard with back to back goals for the Royal Comets.  They pushed all their players to the far side and Johnson drove into open space on the near side and two shots in a row into the upper corner of the goal.    The second half of the final quarter had back and forth scoring with neither team scoring two goals in a row.  Irondequoit spent a good portion of their possessions taking time off the clock and looking to preserve their lead.  The Royal Comets scored the final goal of the contest with 0:24 left on the clock with an 8 meter free position goal form Emily Schillinger.

Both goalies had a number of strong saves.  Both Leah DiDomenico (R-H) and Lydia Fregosi (Irondequoit) recorded six saves.  Draw control was split down the middle with both teams finishing with 10 controls.  Mashewske's four was the highest for either team.  Both programs have another game on Thursday with R-H facing Webster Thomas and Irondequoit facing Victor.
