Spencerport Scores Six in Second Half

- Spencerport came back from a 5-3 deficit at halftime to defeat Churchville-Chili 9-6.  This is the first time that Spencerport has defeated Churchville-Chili since 2009. The Rangers scored four unanswered goals to start the quarter and held the Saints offense to only a single goal in the second half.  Freshman midfielder Erin Coykendall was demonstrative in the contest; she finished the game with 3g-4a.  She was a part of the first 7 goals for the Rangers with the final two goals coming once the Saints had sent their goalie to double the ball.  Coykendall also finished with a team leading six draw controls, which were instrumental in maintaining possession in the second half. Coykendall leads the Rangers in total goals (16), total assists (13) and draw controls (16).

The game was split into a tale of two halves, in the first half the Saints looked the stronger team and led for the entire 25 minutes.  They were strong on offense and particularly strong with their ride.  They held the Rangers to only 3 goals and kept the ball in their offensive end for long stretches of time.  The first goal of the game was scored with an inside feed from Skylar Burlee to Mara Zimmerman.  One minute later and Spencerport tied the game.  Coykendall assisted the first Ranger goal from behind the cage.  She fed from behind on three of her four assists.  Camryn Sack scored the opening goal from the crease to tie the game for the first time at 1-1.  Churchville-Chili took the lead again with an 8 meter goal from Katie Cosgrove.  Cosgrove finished with 3g for the Saints and 4 of the 5 draw controls that went to Churchville-Chili.  Again it took less than one minute for the Rangers to tie the game.  The goal was scored during a broken clear.  Coykendall broke up a pass from a defenseman to the Saints' goalie and deflected the ball into the goal.  The game was tied 2-2 with 16:52 remaining in the half.

Churchville-Chili's third lead was scored on another unassisted goal from Cosgrove.  She found the ball loose on the ground in front of the cage and found the back of the net.  This time the Saints held the lead for nearly four minutes before the Rangers scored on a fast-break goal.  Defensive midfielder Rianna Viavattene made a strong defensive play at the half to get the Rangers the ball.  She looked up field to Coykendall at the restraining line.  Coykendall dodged past two defenseman and finished into the back of the net for her 2nd goal of the night.  Spencerport did not score again for over 19 minutes.  The Saints kept up their strong first half performance with two more goals; both goals were scored with single drives from behind the cage.  The first was scored by Burlee and the second was scored by Cosgrove with only 0:01 remaining on the clock.

The second half was a vastly different story.  The Rangers took solid control of the draw and kept the ball away from the Saints' offense for extended periods of time.  They remained controlled on offense and added four goals before Churchville-Chili scored again.  The first seven minutes of the game were remarkable for Spencerport's offensive pressing at the goal and junior goalie Paulina Goodermote standing on her head to make saves.  She finished with eight saves, seven coming in the second half.  During one particularly impressive stretch, Goodermote had three saves in under 30 seconds.  However, the offensive pressure was too much for the Saints' defense and Spencerport scored the first goal of the half with 18:24 remaining.  Coykendall fed the ball from behind to her sister Emily Coykendall.  Less than one minute later she fed from the same spot to Maliah Benedetto to tie the game at 5-5.

The Rangers took their first lead of the game with 15:40 remaining in the contest. Freshman midfielder Camryn Sack made a strong defensive play during a ride that caused a broken clear goal from Coykendall.  Churchville-Chili called a time-out to stop the Ranger momentum, but they kept up their pressure adding another goal a minute later.  Coykendall fed the ball to Benedetto for the second of her three goals.  Churchville-Chili scored their final goal with 6:53 remaining in the game.  Meredith Woo assisted Jamie Cooper.  The Rangers added two more goals after Churchville Chili had turned to a more aggressive defense, including having Goodermote attempting to press the ball.  Benedetto and Lindsey Coffrey scored the final goals.

With the loss, the Saints fall to 0-5 with four close losses (2 one goal losses to HFL and Fairport).  Churchville-Chili will play again tomorrow night against R-H.  Spencerport improves their record to 3-0 and will face Greece Athena/Odyssey tomorrow night.
