Brighton Fights Back for Late Win

- Fairport BrightonBrighton scored four of the last five goals to comeback and defeat Fairport 14-13.  Both teams held the lead throughout the game, with Fairport holding the largest lead of 9-5 early in the second half.  In total there were seven lead changes in the game and each time that one team threatened to pull away, their opponent came back to tie the game.

The game also featured a high amount of 8m free position goals (or direct passes to goals off of an 8m opportunity).  In total there were nine 8m goals from both teams.  The scoring began with a drive along the right goal line extended to a cutting midfielder.  Brighton’s Katie Lederman started the drive and fed into Susan Lafountain for the goal.  Fairport responded with the next three goals, all of which were scored off the 8m line.  Elena Eichmann, Morgan Schwab (who assisted Sarah Falk on the crease) and Schwab scoring off a shot from the line gave the Red Raiders the 3-0 lead. Brighton’s second goal was their first 8m goal (scored by Gangarosa).  Fairport’s first goal scored in regular play was an impressive second effort from Meghan McLachlan.  The play began with a give-and-go from Mia Brunken.  She fed out to the crease, cut to the center and got back the pass.  Brunken’s shot was saved by Charlotte Sadler (who finished with 2 saves).  The loose ball on the crease was picked up by McLachlan, who finished into the back of the net on the second effort.

The Barons responded with three unanswered goals to take their first lead.  Lederman and Gangarossa scored off the 8m line and Gangarossa added another goal.  The regular play goal began with a strong defensive effort from Lafountain.  She took a hard press on defense that resulted in a caused turnover.  The ball was scooped up and pressed forward for a fast-break.  Gangarossa drove to the cage for the goal.  Fairport called their first timeout after the Brighton goal.  The Red Raiders came back out of the timeout and scored four goals before halftime.  The first goal back from the timeout began with an impressive pass from Eichmann.  She found Falk open cutting towards the crease.  Falk scored the second goal with another cut to the crease, this time fed by McLachlan.  Ten seconds later they scored again on a fast-break with Schwab assisting Cameryn Dera.  Falk came back for her fourth goal of the night with another inside feed.  This time beginning off the 8m line and ending off a feed from Eichmann that was similar to the feed that began the scoring drive.  Fairport led 8-5 at halftime.

In the second half, Fairport scored the first goal and Brighton responded with five unanswered.  After Schwab scored another 8m goal, the Red Raiders held a four-goal lead (the largest by either team).  Brighton responded with goals from Rae Strazdins (2), Gangarosa, Lederman, and Kathryn Smolensky.  Smolensky also assisted the goal just previous to her goal.  The two were only 0:35 apart and were a shift in pace to give Brighton the advantage.  After taking the 10-9 lead, Fairport came back with another run of three goals.  Schwab scored another 8m with 10:50 remaining.  With 9:52 remaining, Fairport scored one of the best goals of the night.  Falk fed from the top of the 12m line, though traffic into a cutting Eichmann.  The feed, catch and shot were all examples of the high level of play we see in Section Five.  The third goal was a feed from the mark behind the cage from McLachlan to Falk.  Fairport led by two (12-10) with 8:29 remaining.

Brighton came back with three more goals to go back into the lead.  Lederman scored with a drive from the right and less than a minute later, Smolensky scored with a drive from the left.  The go-ahead goal was scored with a behind the cage feed from Lederman to Lafountain.  The final Red Raider goal was scored with 1:05 on the clock to force the seventh tie of the game.  As had become common throughout the game, the goal began on 8m line.  Emma Gaenzle had the shot and she fed to Dera for the goal.  Brighton won the next draw control and the final goal was scored off an inside feed from Lederman to Strazdins.

Overall the game was defined by who controlled the draw.  Early in the game Fairport won nearly all the draws.  Eichmann was demonstrative on the circle.  She came through traffic on multiple occations to come away with the ball and give Fairport a shot at the cage.  She finished with 5 recorded draw controls.  Falk and Schwab also recorded five each.  For Brighton, the draws came more in the second half.  Gangarossa recorded 3.  In the second half, Brighton also came away with at least 3 technical draw controls to give them possessions late.
